I say go 4runner. Yes, the 3.0l is a dog, but the manual transmission that comes on it is much stronger and takes to engine swaps totally differently. That engine bay will swallow a 4.3l v6 like your s10's like its hungry. It can support a 350 v8, and most other small blocks. I am personally planning on a 1uzfe 4.0l V8 out of a lexus, as its one of the most efficient small displacement v8s available. It'll barely fit in the engine compartment, and do I love it.

It should be noted that the size of the truck and 4Runner engine bays are identical.

Daaaaamn, why so serious?

The 22R engines were WAY over-engineered, and under powered, hence their superior longevity. Dependability goes down as you tinker with em trying to squeeze out more power. They're not little Honda rice burners. Leave em stock!! Use gear upgrades for off- roading.
I'll second the fuel economy. That's in a heavy undergeared 2nd gen 4Runner. Trick is to keep the rpm low and barely touch the accelerator.

If I had the chance to do it over again I'd have waited and found an 85 4runner. Don't get me wrong I love my truck but it's a little limited when you want to haul other folks. That and they look great topless with a couple of chicks in the back..... topless.......

think of it this way. what would you rather have. a couple extra seats. or a bed. im 17 and i ride dirtbikes so the bed was a must. the truck that i wanted was a 1985 toyota pickup with a 22re and xtra cab. so when i found my truck there was no turning back. and i even like the color
