you should get a pickup. i just turned 17 and this truck has been nothing but awesome to me. i have a 1989 toyota pickup. regular cab. i payed 600 for it and put some work into it. i put a header with 2.5" straight pipe with no cat.
the truck is awesome to me. i take it wheelin and have no problems. drive home and get 23mpg the whole way, just cruising at 80mph. i've gotten my truck up to speeds over 120 down hill and hit corners and had no problem

 

I have a 87 4Runner with 283,000 miles as of this date. I have had only one mechanical problem, jumped time, but it was due to my own stupidity. Look at it this way. You can take off the top and remove the roll bar with only eight bolts if you want to haul your dirt bike that bad. But what about the carpet? Take it out and rhino line it. I used the cheaper spray can stuff which works o.k. Lay the seats down or unbolt them either way. I love the 4runner for stuff like camping gear. If you sling mud, and you will, or if it rains stayd clean and dry. That is if you keep the side windows closed. Only downside I have found so far is that if the back window is down while traveling around town, you will go home high, but in the woods I never notice it. 22RE is the way to go. I once sucked in about a gallon or so of water through the air intake on the trail. keep oil and storage in the back for this reason. Drained the oil and pulled the spark plugs to push the water out, keep WD40 as well, and drove it off the trail with no problems. Absolutely surprised and will forever be devoted to Toyota.

 

yeah they really are amazing. i have 230,000 miles on my original 22RE and i beat the crap out of it, and it runs perfect still. doesn't burn a drop of oil.

i towed a trailer with 3 motorcycles and a canopy on my truck completely full of camping gear, towed it about 400 miles each way got 15 miles a gallon doin 75mph the whole way.

 

right now, im kind of leaning tord a 4runner, its kinda best of both worlds

My 3.0 Runner gets about 15 on average around town, probably around 17 on the highway. I have had a couple of 22re's and for the mileage I'd rather have the 3VZE, the 22re is tough as nails, but honestly the 3.0 is pretty damn tough too, it leaves a little to be desired as far as speed, but down the beach it does nice job and pulling the boat is no problem at all.

I'll sacrifice the 3mpg to be able to do what I need to.

Don't get me wrong, I'd drop the 3.4 in it in a second if it was offered up. But after my last 4cyl pickup, I swore off 4 bangers for good.

3.0's might have HG issues, but 22's have timing chain/cover issues. You can find fault's in any motor.....but seeing as how your coming from a Chevy I'd bet the 3.0 would be welcome to you...although all the GM's I've had have been tough as hell. Their 3.8 V6 is a great motor.

hey, first of all dont badmouth chevy, the only cars ill own are chevys or toyotas. in my 22re with about 300,000 miles, i just pulled 18.7MPG. my fuel gauge is messed up, and it read half a tank at 200 miles, then started chuggin at 205 miles. filled up with 12.8 gallons.. lol. it would have been better, except when i put that supra intake i have for sale on it, i was hot roddin it around makin sure it worked. (and surprised the hell out of people, they thought i had a sleeper motor in there). so now ill be takin it real easy to see the true mileage. (and that 18.7MPG was around town and occasionally on the freeway, but i have a habit of going 80 on the freeway, so im gonna keep it at 55 to see what happens). ill let you know. expect anywhere between 15 and, realistically, 25mpg. that 25mpg, of course, being on the freeway barely keeping up with traffic. then again 25MPG is being kind,but it happens once in awhile

 

Stockyotadriver, I highly doubt you get 23mpg goin 80mph, but 22RE's do get around 26mpg @ 65mph for sure. That is if you don't kill your back pressure by putting a 2.5'' straight pipe on with no cat! Toyota designed the 22RE with a 2'' catalitic exhaust for a reason. The 22R engines were WAY over-engineered, and under powered, hence their superior longevity. Dependability goes down as you tinker with em trying to squeeze out more power. They're not little Honda rice burners. Leave em stock!! Use gear upgrades for off- roading.

I love the 4Runners most of all because of all the options, one being that is can also be used as a pick up of sort. Here are a few pictures of mine although I average about 14-16mpg. Maybe it is because of the 33" tires, 4:88 gears, and the little 22RE is so under powered that I can not push it over 55mph on the 6% elevation inclines with out watching the water temp nearly approach the redline.
