Hey im a new 4 runner owner and am pleased with it...I have a 95 auto,V6,2wd with around 15x,xxx..My question is i have a 93 wrangler i take offroading and i was wondering if the 4 runner will be able to tow it..And if so in what way would i be able to tow it?Just curious about it because i would not want to mess my 4 runner up..All is appreciated..

I wouldnt tow anything with the v6, and you have an auto behind it so its not a good combo.

You be hard on that v6 and pop goes the head gasket.

 

i dont know about that... I've towed with my old 3.0 several times and it never had an issue.. I towed my blue truck fully loaded moving back from college from Stockton CA to Portland OR without any issues.... granted i was only able to go 35 mph in 3rd gear at 4k over the pass but it did ti like a champ.


as far as towing a wrangler, i would flat tow it if its possible. less weight with out a trailer, but you dont have trailer brakes helping...

 

ok so good decision would be to find something else...i dont really want to take a chance on breaking anything...so what would u suggest as a decent tow rig...something that doesnt cost alot to buy used for like a grand or something...budget fun for now...

I've read many posts where towing caused the veezy gasket to blow, so I would be wary. The only way I would even consider it is if I installed headers, to get rid of the stupid stock crossover and protect cyl 6, AND, if I installed an extra trans cooler like turborich covered in this excellent writeup:

Even with those mods, I think it would still be risky.

Yeah flat tow would be good BUT then you have dead weight pushing you with no added braking power. At least with a trailer you have the tongue weight to help your braking traction and you have trailer brakes.


I would be more worried about stopping than getting going.

I've got the 3VZE, I don't tow a vehicle with it but I have towed several things around town with my 5x8 trailer. I have hauled several loads of top soil that weighed around 2500-3000 lbs each. I also hauled my spa to my house. Now I NEVER stress the engine while towing anything. I am as light on the gas as I can be, I keep the overdrive off while towing & use the ETC switch for a few extra RPM's between shifts. I would be worried about hauling a heavy load up a hill though as things may warm up. Using headers to remove the x-over pipe is a very good suggestion if it's within your budget. It may be cheaper in the long run to pick up an old full size p/u with a V-8 then it would be to install headers & new head gaskets if things go wrong. I think the Toyota is rated at 3,500 lbs though. Just my 2 cents.
