Tow Hitches and advise(4 banger guys)

Alright so appearantly I've volunteered to help my buddy fix up his "new" volvo(late 80's tank).

The car is located about 500miles and over the Rocky Mountains away(I'm in Calgary, the car is in Prince George). The plan thus far is to drive there, get the car running and then drive it back. If we can't get it running, I was thinking about towing it back.

I know U-haul rents car trailers and dollys, and I've been meaning to get a hitch anyways. But what about actually towing through the mountain with a 22RTE? I figure it's not going to be fast, but I've got a manual tranny, bigger brakes, and power better than a 3.0.

Thoughts, reccomendations?

so long as you keep your rig serviced and in good shape, towing shouldnt be a problem. if you are not in a big rush, even better. verify the total weight youll be towing and see if it can be done with your rig.

iirc, you should be good for at least 3500 lbs. coming back through the rockies at this time of year you will also want to make sure the trailer has brakes as well. take your time, we dont want to see or hear about any carnage!!

good luck

Might want to check with U-Haul before you get your hitch and plan on renting a dolly or hauler.

Last time I rented a Uhaul car-hauler ($50 for a full weekend!) their rental contract required a full size vehicle capable of towing it.

Uhaul does have requirements for towing capacity that the early 4runner probably doesn't meet. They'll want to know what you're towing too.

You certainly get the truck and volvo up the mountain, it might be a long slow trip, but it can be done.. It's the long grades down the mountain that I'd be worried about. You'll be packing 100% more weight than your vehicle would otherwise.

we've had that problem too. we just picked up the trailer with a friends full sized truck, then used my truck to pull it.

Just based on my quick looking on uhauls website, they listed needing a hard top vehicle(ie no jeeps), a GVW at least 600lbs heavier than the loaded trailer you will be pulling, and a minimum class 2 hitch. I think I should have it covered.

This is only a plan B...or possibly C, but I still want to have all my bases covered.

Hi Bill:
FWIW
There is some information on this site wrt trailers in BC

http://www.britishcolumbia.com/infor...tails.asp?id=6

I've always heard that BC tends to be more strict for towing than Alberta - probably beccause our roads are crap compared to your Texas sized ones.

I'd be less worried about your Toyota then the UHaul - I've seen some "Adventures in Moving" from those boys. I'd rather rent from Budget or Rider.

I towed a 2500lb boat with mine for a while and it was almost completely unbearable. As a matter of fact, I killed a motor doing it and the biggest hills we have here in FL you can jump and see over.

I'm going to say it wouldn't be worth it based on my experience with a lighter tow-able than you'll have. I do have 32x11.50's on my truck though so if you have stock tires you may fair better than me.
