Tires & Gears

I decided I want to get either 31" or 33" tires, I thought about getting 33's, but didn't want to regear, well proper gearing for 31's is 4.56 so It'd still be slow and I'd still want regearing, I will be locking the rear, or getting a LSD and a 2" lift, So I figured I misewell get 33's if I will be regearing anyways... Any opinions? Hows 31's with stock gears? With 28" tires I can bark the tires in 3rd gear on a good day.. I'd like to keep that, or atleast bark 2nd.. hehe..

ok..well when i had my 31x10.50's on our '86 carb'd 22R..it would bark the tires in 3rd gear...and i could do a mean burnout in 1st and sometimes 2nd if the conditions are right...im thinking about entering a burnout contest with it...but the highway speed and the power..was not good at all..top speed was 60mph MAYBE and thats 5th gear and floored on a straightaway...and its a rebuilt motor...with the factory tires it'll do 90 easy...if you go to 33's then get 4.88's...when i get my '80 some new rubber im getting 5.29's because i will be going to about a 37" or bigger sometime in the future...and lockers front and rear...it doesnt affect so much that it isnt driveable...but 4.56's would be great to have...but if you get bigger tires...sooner or later you're gonna want some bigger tires so i'd go with 4.88's...just my couple pennies

Bark the tires with a 22RE??????? Come on now..... I run 31's with stock 4:10s and like it. The manual trans are geared lower so you can get away with it. If you have an auto forget it.

I researched the hell out of this when I came accross it.

I wanted a selectable locker as well. I looked far and wide for a 4.56 e-locker. I don't believe they even make them. The 4.30 is a plentiful e-locker and you can find a 4.30 front out of a 22RE auto. So that's what I did. I don't plan to go bigger than 32's. I have yet to install them, but it should work well and be a helluva lot cheaper than regearing to something else. Plus if you ever like to drive on the stock tires (like I do in the winter), it's a very good trade-off.

Oh....yeah, when I pull the top off my truck, I can chirp the stock tires as well.

I had 4.56 and 31's and it was a pretty good combo, but first was kinda short - by the time you got moving it seemed you were tached out. 4.56 and 33's was OK, first had "legs", but 5th was a bit tall, had to downshift frequently. 4.88 and 33's is the best combo of the three - first is usable, and 5th will hold on mild rollers.

One thing I learned is, if in doubt, select the lower gears. The extra 200 RPM or so on the highway makes a big difference in gas mileage by not having to downshift all the time!

My 22RE won't bark tires. Period. It just bogs down when you drop the clutch.

I've got 31x10.50 right now and 4.56 gears. I'm planning on going to 33's here soon and I won't be able to regear for about a month or two. 31's and 4.56 works very well. My lower gears are fine and I can do 85 - 90 mph easily.

Even more true with the auto I am running 31's with 5.29's and it's not too low.

I recommend 7.56's and 40's!

Just kidding.
I left my gearing completely stock and ran 32's for a decade. Wheeled all over the place. Had a blast and had to turn around or bypass a lot of hard stuff. Why?

I saved and planned because I only wanted to regear once, pay for a lift once, pay for lockers once...hopefully you get the idea. Think ahead and allow yourself to dream a little bit. Delayed gratification is something few people have the self-discipline to truly enjoy.

pay attention folks. Some wisdom being imparted here.
But to qualify this statement...it only applies to Toyotas that are geared low at the axles from the factory. 4.XX:1 for example. A new Tundra or Sequoia with the 5.7 is a different story.

Jeep, American Iron in general are not geared low at the axles. Neither are British 4X's. They are geared low (though just barely) at the transfer case.

Point is, don't go making these type of statements about the virtues of low gearing around people driving lesser rigs...they won't get it and you will look like a lunatic.

I had 4.88s and 33x12.50s on my 22re 89 5spd 4runner with the rear lincoln locked. I could break both meats loose in first if I dumped the clutch, and it was pretty snappy in all other gears. Would have to downshift from 5th only on a good sized hill, or if I had a really good head wind.

My 22r 84 5spd PU with 31x10.50s and 4.10s with open diffs is... Not so great. I can burn one tire real well in 1st, but it aint no where near as snappy as my 89 4R was. Constantly down shifting from 5th on the mildest of hills.

I'm just wondering how my 84 PU will do with its shiny new lincoln locked 5.29s and 35x12.50s Almost done...

At 60 mph, according to my math, your 84 was turning about 2213 rpm with the 31's. And that was not so great?

With your new 5.29's and 35's you will be at 2529 rpm.

That compares favorably with what you liked with your '89 4R's 4.88's since it would have been turning 2474 at 60 mph.

I would have gone deeper with the gears but it should be a nice balance for power and economy with the 5.29's. Congrats on your new setup.

Well another thing to take into account is the fact that my 89 4R was a fuel injected 22re while my 84 PU is a carbed 22r. Not sure of the actual numbers, but I'm sure that the 22re has just a tad more "huevos" than the 22r does.

But yeah, I'm excited. Just have to install the 3rds, get the powersteering pump to finish up the steering, and finish up the rear portion of the lift when my rear springs get to my front door tomorrow. Bout 85% done. Maybe have it rolling tomorrow or wednesday.
