A friend has an 86 pick-up.Who knows what year engine is in it!The 86 timing set does not fit.there are 98 links in the chain. He tries another year model timing set with 96 links in the chain. It dont fit either. It may be a 20R we dont know but would that make any diff?Thanx

Are the sprockets for a single chain or double?

I believe that the 81 and 82 years had a 98 link double chain setup. (someone correct me if I'm wrong on those years). 83 and 84 changed to single chain/98 links. In 85 that changed to the 96 link single chain. I bought a motor last spring from an "87" and once I dove into replacing the kit, I found out it's actually from 81 or 82 because I have the 98/double chain kit in it. Also round exhaust ports on the head is 84 and older. Pear-shaped are 85 and up. Hope it helps a little.

Was the motor missing it's timing components when he bought it?

The head is taller- 3.290" from cam centerline to deck (head gasket surface) and the block is taller- 9.120" from crank centerline to deck (head gasket surface) for 84 and below; whereas on the 85 and up they are 3.130" and 8.930" respectively; barring any milling which would obviously make the distances less than those.

No other combination of head / block should require a longer chain, being 98 links, than the 84, and earlier whether single or dual row chains or 22r, 20r, 18r, or even 21r for that matter.

Are you trying to put the chain on with the tensioner installed?
If so, maybe remove the tensioner, install the chain, then put the tensioner back on.
Or take the chain you have and count the links?
It doesn't have a head gasket shim installed, does it? (shouldn't matter but....)

You can tell the old/new heads apart by their timing covers, but I can't describe it. The older ones are much more rounded, and had a squarish front, where the newer ones had the front corners angled.

How far off is the chain from fitting? It's a REALLY tight fit when new.

the 81-84 20r and 22r block are taller than the 85 and up lazer block by 2 or 3 mm. the 22r head has a swirl type combustion chamber where as the 20r head has the dome type. are the chains too long or too short? I have a 20r head on a 84 22r block and I know the 85 chain is too short. you might have to take a chain link out of the longer chain, but not something I would recomend

if your having a hard time with chains it might be an idea to find someone with a 22r head that will trade you or buy another one. now there are 2 22r heads out, one is for the older 22r that has the open combustion chamber for the dish top pistons and the other is the swirl type for the 85 and newer 22re fuel injected with the lazer block and the flat top pistons. just make sure of what you have before sending parts to the machine shop to have them cut down for things to fit, seen it happen, but needed an adjustable cam gear afterwards to make it run good.

In a 'normal' replacement, you do have to pull up with a prying tool, like a screwdriver to get the cam gear up onto the camshaft. This overcomes the tensioner, which is pushing into the chain, taking up slack. I have seen pix of tape holding the tensioner compressed during this part. My preference is to have the timing cover in place first, with the cam gear in the chain at the correct spot. Then drop the head into place and torque and finally, install the cam gear up onto the cam, prying it up into place.
