timing chain
my 87 4runner's timing chain is at the end of its life span, i would like to change it my self but right now i don't have the time, tools or garage to do it. I went to the local "toyota guy" and he said i was probably looking at $500-550, this seems fair what do you guys think? hopefully after this i should be good for another 165 thousand miles

$500 sounds fair. Perhaps you could get him to replace the timing chain guides with steel backed ones. You may also want to consider having the waterpump replaced after 165k miles, unless it's already been done and is not leaking.

buy the kit from engine builder with the steel guide
it will last much longer
the kit was i think about 160 bucks...?
and i paid a friend of mine 200 or so to do it as a side job at his shop. i guess i got a pretty good deal, it all depends on who you know
btw, dont put it off much longer if you're sure it needs to be done
if that thing breaks at the wrong time your engine is likely to be totally ĊĊĊĊed...and aside from the possibility of that, if the chain has eaten through the cheap factory plastic guide, it could wear far enough into your head to get into a nearby coolant passage, and then you've got water in your oil and you're going to have to get the head welded
the job can be done without removing the head...thats how they did mine. but when they look up the job in their books or computer or whatever, its going to tell them to do a head gasket and everything....i'm assuming the dude you know isnt planning on doing all that for 500 dollars, so he probably knows the way around it, but i dont know

Well i took it over today and gave him the go ahead, he said that he always uses the timing kit with the metel guides. and i assume he knows the way around talking the head off for this price, and because he has something like 20 years working for toyota and he now runs out of his garage.
