Is there a 4wd light?

I have an 88 4runner, SR5, automatic and was wondering if there was a light that was supposed to come on when I put it in 4wd. When I first got it a few months ago, I put it in 4wd and no light came on but I know that the 4wd works due to difference in driving, turning, etc.... is there supposed to be a light that comes on in the dash when the 4wd is engaged? if so, what do I need to do in order to make sure everything really is working properly? is there a bulb that i can replace to get the light to come on? thanks so much!!

I believe theres a wire connector on the transfer case that runs to the guage. If that is unplugged, the light will not turn on. I'd check that first before tearing into your dash to check for a burnt bulb.

Yep, all 1st gen 4Runners were 4WD and they all have the 4WD light on the dash.

The wires sometimes get broken where they come out of the sensor/switch on the transfer case.

Just crawl under the truck and look at the transfer case, both sides and if you can, look on top as much as possible. On mine it was on the drivers side if I remember correctly. Its pretty simple, just look around and check for a wire connector dangling around, might be tucked up on top of the transfer case or maybe as simple as its right next to where it would plug in. If you find a connector thats plugged in on the transfer case, trace the wire as far as you can and make sure it's not damaged or unplug it and see if it's filled with dirt or anything. I'd post pics, but I won't be able to get to until tomorrow evening.

There are TWO connections to check under the truck. One near the shifter on the case and one up by the starter. Up by the starter there will be a couple different plugs. ONE MAY NOT BE USED. The Main harness on the motor has provisions for both auto and manual. The manual only has the revers light connection and the transfer case indicator.

i looked everywhere and saw a few wires but they all look like they are connected. i saw one spot where it looks like some wires were taped with electrical tape. that might be the problem but I am not sure. it is very hard to get to. should i even worry about it? is this a problem that I need to fix or can i just forget about it?

You know there is another connection to be checked.

The light wires is in with the FI harness. If the motor or head has been pulled its possible that they unplugged the harness in the passenger side kick panel at the computer and didn't get it plugged back in there.
