Tell me how my t-case position sensor was bypassed.

First, I'd like to give props to this site for steering me in the right direction for numerous problems since buying a 90 4runner a couple months ago.
So, like I said I have a 90 4runner 4x4 SR5 5spd. The truck came with an automatic transmission from the factory, but one of the previous owners put in a 5spd. Of course it has the ADD system, but in order to put it in 4wd I have to hit what used to be the ect button then select 4hi/lo. The old ect button is what turns the 4wd dash light on.
The t-case position sensor is not plugged in to anything. In fact, it doesn't even have a plug on it anymore it's just 2 wires dangling.
Can anyone explain to me exactly how this was done? Thanks

Uh, you want one of us to tell you what the person from whom you bought the truck did?

Well, I can make a guess. I assume your truck had the A340H transmission and transfer case, and you now have a 5-speed and a VF1A or an RF1A. The automatic had a Transfer Position Switch, and your current transfer case has (had) a Transfer Indicator switch. http://web.archive.org/web/201204242...26addcontr.pdf It doesn't look that complex to use the Transfer Indicator Switch to replace the Transfer Position Switch. So why did they use the ECT switch (which would do nothing for your 5-spd) instead? I'm going to guess your current Transfer Indicator Switch doesn't work.

I assume you care. I would get out the multimeter and see if the switch on your transfer case works at all. If it does, you should be able to pop out your ECT switch and see which wires were used.

Since your Transfer Indicator Switch isn't connected, you're probably not getting the signals to the ECU. I can't say for sure what consequence that has.

lock the add selector in place with a hose clamp and get some manual hubs, no more electrical/vacuum worries.

No, scope, I don't want anyone to tell me how a previous owner put in a 5spd. And no, I don't want anyone to tell me why a PO did something.
I was asking how a PO rigged up the ect button to activate the ADD system and bypassing the transfer indicator switch. Sorry for calling it a transfer position sensor in my original post.

That's my next move, rattlewagon, after I swap out the rear end and front diff from a parts 4runner I have. The 3.slo and 4.10 gears that's currently under my runner don't like the 33x12.50's that's on it. The 4.88's that's under my parts runner should pull them a lot better.
