Tailgate - External Spare Tire Compatability

Hi there.

My tailgate is rusty and I need a new one.

I currently have the external spare tire mount on the tailgate.

I have a line on a tailgate without the spare tire mount.

Can I convert the new tailgate to an external tire mount easily?

I like the external mount and want to keep it.

thanks

Should be able to. Drill holes in the same spots. You should probably look inside your current one to verify if there are any structural pieces. I don't recall there being any on 1rst gens, but can't be sure.

Unfortunately I'm not able to check them out before I buy.

Not sure what you mean about 1rst gens.

Anyone know if it's easy to fit the latching plate onto a tailgate that did not come with the latching plate?

yes, but it would be a lot of work... cutting and rewiring reverse lights, filling the holes from the old reverse lights... welding on the support piece for the arm to the center of the tailgate...
IMHO, it would be cheaper and easier to just find one that is set up for the tire carrier or get rid of it all together...

Try this it is a complete retrofit of a stock tire carrier it will give you the info you need for the tailgate latch

Thanks olman. I searched through 17 pages of stuff but didn't find that.

It looks like a non-carrier tailgate has the indent in it to accept the latch plate,

That was my biggest worry. I have my rusty carrier tailgate so I have all the parts I think I need.
