Tachometer won't rev past 2000 RPM (Engine runs normally)

I found lots of posts about tachometers but couldn't find one with this scenario. It is consistent and has been for several months.

3VZE 94 4runner, 5sp, 230k miles

I normally don't use my tach while driving but i happened to notice at 75 mph I was running at 2k rpm instead of 3300 and for a moment thought I was going to shatter my best MPG record. When I got off the highway and stopped I noticed that the tach dropped back down to 0. When i started accelerating it moves normally up to 2000 RPM and then stops. It does this in every gear and has never once jumped around or acted funny. The engine revs fine but the tach does not.

The wiring must be OK for it to work properly from 0 - 1999 RPM so I'm looking for answers as to what could cause this.

Any help would be appreciated.

I originally had a video that I found on youtube that i thought was a similar issue but it was not. I've removed it from the post.

clogged fuel filter?
and there is nothing normal about the way that engine runs.
Not sure about the impact that the FP regulator would have.
Also, no oil pressure is registering on the gauge in the cluster?
Also, check your TPS which is near your throttle body butterfly assembly.....did the 3 or 4 wire harness fall off?

Sorry again, I should have been more clear. That video is not of my vehicle. I'll go remove it.

My vehicle runs normally just the tach goes from 0 to 2000 and then stops.

Any ideas? I've attached a picture of me going around 70mph in 5th gear. The first one is shows where the tachometer hangs and the other shows with clutch in.

The vehicle runs great but I'd like to figure this out if possible.

Picture 1: 70mph 5th gear

70mph 5th gear, tach worked normal from idle to almost 2000 RPM and then hangs.

70mph 5th gear, clutch in, tach drops normally. no jumping around.

Ok....I see the issue now....engine runs up to 6000 rpm but tack does not. Did you just recently have the cluster out for some other reason?

Otherwise, I'm thinking the main spring is busted. There is no reason to believe that the needle is actually touching the painted backboard and is just an interference issue?

I believe that is an electrical problem with the tachometer itself. I don't think there is a spring in the tachometer.

I would check the wiring that goes to the tachometer to make sure there isn't a frayed wire or something like that.

If the wiring looks good, take the cluster out and make sure the tachometer does not "stick" around the 2000 rpm mark. It is possible that it is just old and sticking.

There is a test for the tachometer in the Factory Service Manual but I don't have it with me at the moment.

Thanks for the info. I'll check out the service manual.

I will say it a got 230k hard miles on it. I've never had the cluster out of it and I traced the wires under the hood. I guess the next step is check the fsm and possibly pull the cluster.

Did you ever fix this?

Hey, my '87 4Runner does the same thing. Doesn't go past 2k on the tach. Did you ever find a fix?
