Ha ha, that's like the famous 'light weight oil is better' article. I actually agree with that guy on the left hand "W" number, but not on the right hand number; I think his recs would be too low for our motors. It's good food for thought, if one has the time and energy to read it. I've noticed there are many references to the article on the bobistheoilguy forum and of course much debate.

 

Haas is a good read, I refer to it often. He sold me on 5/30 syn valvoline.

 

after reading a bunch of this stuff, I think I am going back to a 40 weight... I have been running 5W30 as recommended by my oil cap "for fuel efficiency", but I always thought that was a little too thin. If fuel efficiency doesn't suffer after all (or even very little for that matter), I think I will switch back in hopes of prolonging my engine's life. She's at 225k and counting . The previous owner ran synthetic from the 100k mark on, and I have also used nothing but synthetic. With all those miles, even after a 5k oil change interval, it's not low on oil, I'm very pleased lol.

 

stick with the 5/30, heavier oilw will retard oil flow. Your start ups will not like the heavier stuff.

I just put in some of that Shell Rotella 5W40 syn and my engine seems to start much easier and so far the start up rattle is non existent. It's cold here right now so I'm going to drive it around tomorrow and see how it fairs. I paid $19 for a gallon at Wally World. Not bad for a full syn.
