Well I got pretty stuck in some mud in an ravine. I think I blew the clutch trying to get out. I come back to it the next day with a buddy in his jeep and a 8k winch. They still couldn't get me out. My wheels weren't spinning at all.

I think it's the clutch, it was the strongest smelling clutch smell Ive ever smelled....if that makes sense. Also, I tried 2wd, 4l with hubs unlocked, it wouldn't go. I could leave it running, in gear, with the clutch out and it wouldn't stall.

When a tow truck with 2 10,000lbs winches got me out I was able to drive in 1st gear only creeping along at about 4k rpms. This is a brand new Luk clutch. I really didn't push it that hard...kinda disappointed. Every one I talked to said get a LUK.

The good news is that I already had to pull the trans next weekend to do either the rear main seal, or the trans seal( probably do both for the hell of it)

Any recommendations for the next clutch? Are LUKs good? Maybe I did push it to hard? thanks for any help! Oh yeah, and it was a 300 dollar tow. The first tow truck got stuck!

I bet when you replace it you're going to see the disc grenaded.

OEM Aisin is my preference but if you are hard on it like this all the time ceramic.
I personally don't like the ceramic if you daily drive at all, way too grabby.

Hey Brian! yeah, I can second that, actually, regarding the ceramic.... It was driving me crazy in my 86, so I went back to a metallic 1600 rated Aisin. Even that, in L.A., was a lil heavy, ..but not near as "Jerky" lol. Now I have an OEM Aisin in my 87 again and it's like "Butter" again, lol

PS> I live in Palos Verdes, CA, "Land of Rolling Hills", and it's VERY hard on many peeps clutches. Mine does fine, up and down steep hills all day, every day. ANDDDDDDDDD, in this truck, when I pulled the motor out, 150K later, the OEM Clutch that was in there was STILL IN TACT AND HAD SOME MEAT ON IT! They're good, I suppose, eh? lol

 

how bad was it on the road? My truck kinda rides like a tank already as it is. I think I could put up with it if it is durable, last long and wont burn out under off road conditions

 

Well, it's just that MOST of my driving is in L.A., .....fairly diff. than NoCal, ya know? lol. "Stop, hurry up and wait, go, stop, go, stop.......creep, go", lol... My buddy says, "I'm getting Popeye Calf on the left leg here!" ...he's from the Country in Montana,lol.

But hey, if you're wheeling often, you'll probably be pretty used to that. When I do go, I go for a couple weeks, creeping around and finding as many new spots for the 'next trip' as I can, so I use it quite a bit, and mine's held up fine. Maybe you're harder than usual on the clutch, etc.,? All in all, I think I'd trust Wabbit or Mike from Marlin, if you give them the detailed specifics of how/how much you drive/where, how often, etc. Maybe you just got a defective one? Hard to say, and you'll get plenty of differing opinions from 'users' on here, ya know?

 

yeah I understand. Here in Chico. I probably spend more time offroad than driving in town. I dont drive on freeways, and its only 10 minutes to work, 10 minutes back home and theres never any traffic or excessive stop lights.

 

Center force clutches ar designed for grabbing at high rpms, I have heard good things about the marlin set up but I personally put the factory Toyota set up in both my sa 86 4runner and in my 86 4x4 22ret pickup. I like the way they feel and the toyota clutches IMO last

 

well it looks like my Luk clutch is under warranty by a BPS (Brake Parts Supply) where I bought it from. I am going to go that rought, but if it goes out again, I will be going with something more heavy duty. Thank you for all your replies and help.

Luks are decent clutches, had some in vws and theyre oem for my 94 bmw. I've also had good luck with sachs brand. Its what I bought for my truck which is sitting in the box waiting for me to install it in my truck so I can drive it again.

 

But man, you're a MAGIC NINJA, HOMIE,....you can do it!! hahaha.

Man, sucks for all the trouble and towing bill and now clutch replacement that you are going through. There are just toooooooo many reasons why I hate mud bogging

 

what up skoti89 I live in chico as well, I got an 87 and mine is slipping bad I can only drive around town, I think my rear main seal is leaking on the flywheel or something, I thought that when clutches go out they GO OUT not rev up high but still creep you around town

 

Not a bad idea to replace your rear main seal since you'll have everything out.

skoti89, Please also remember to check out the flywheel and most likely get it resurfaced so the new clutch will be able to break in properly.

Yeah, I can creep around my parking lot in 4 lo at about 4 to 5 k rpms. I think the rear main seal can leak onto to the clutch and ultimately make it wear faster or cause it to fry. The main reason I think its the clutch is the smell....

 

I hope the flywheel will be ok. When I rebuilt the motor and put in the new clutch, the machinist at my work took mine and just swapped it out for a newer one that was already resurfaced.

I posted this thread a little while ago because I had an oil leak after the fresh rebuild.

I've come to the conclusion that it is either the rear main seal or the trans seal. I am going to replace both while I'm in there any way (especially since I used the cheap seal that came with a 350 dollar full rebuild kit)
