Swapping IFS from 92

Hello All,

I recently picked up an 89 4runner where the previous owner was between swapping the front and rear diffs. The front is 4.10 with the rear at 4.56 rolling on a set of 265/70-17's @31.6" in height with manual hubs.

I was able to locate a 92 4runner in the local upull-n-pay with a 4.56 ADD front diff, which I'd like to swap into my rig. Other than pulling the ADD and corresponding axle tube what else do I need to do to the diff? I was planning to swap the axle tube and axle from my existing diff, and from the little I've found it seems I may have to change a seal (http://www.brian894x4.com/Gearratiosanddiffs.html). And from this site (http://www.gearinstalls.com/needlebearing.htm) it seems a bearing may need to be changed.

Any help appreciated!

d.

Swapping ADD IFS into an 89

If you wanna ask questions this is not the site. I've never got a reply to anything I've ever asked. It's a half ass decent site for researching your next project. But that being said, from one yota tech nobody to another. You should be able to slide out your axles a couple inches, being careful not to damage outer seals. Pull front third member. Clean off any gasket or silicone from axle housing and new third. Reapply silicone to new third and install. Might not be a bad idea to change the pinion seal on new third with a heavy duty from marlin. Before installing

Chances are the 92 is a V6 and as I understand it they are different size but I could be wrong.

Swapping diffs is easy on these. Disconnect your brake line, remove the cotter pin and pin that holds your parking brake cable and the 4 bolts that hold the brake drum assembly to the axle and slide the axles out. Once the axles are clear, just unbolt the diff and pull out. Really great setup.

Front diff you guys. It's nothing like removing a rear 3rd member. I'd go into it, but it's pretty self-explanatory.

And the V6 version is basically the same. It has larger carrier bearings. But the carrier can still be used in a 4cyl. housing...AFAIK. But it doesn't sound like that's what he's going to be doing anyway.

I can't be here all the time to answer everybody's questions. Sorry if I missed your previous posts/threads. I'll be mindful to avoid them in the future. With your trashy attitude and all.

Haha I know. I've never seen a thread with zero replies to it. People that are on here love shooting the breeze about our trucks.

I appreciate the responses, any help is appreciated.

I did go through with the swap a few weeks back. I pulled the 92 diff apart since it had the ADD setup, pulled the drivers side axle tube(s), popped in a new axle seal and c-clip on my original axle. Put all back together using my original axle tube, mounted it up and it works great! I now have 4.56 front and rear and the weird thing is since I did the swap my fuel mileage has actually improved by 2mpg... Gotta love it!

Sweet to hear it went well. If you changed the rears to 4.56 did you notice a large change in highway RPM ?

When I got the truck the rear was already setup with 4.56 in the rear and 4.10 in the front. So after the swap i have 4.56 front and rear, with no noticeable change in RPM...

Thanks,

d.
