Stock g144 gears (4.88)

A guy is willing to sell me his 3rd member from his 95 4runner has the stock 4.88 gears super rare willing to give me it for $85 and he's missing the rear pinion. Myself being a newbie to the gears. What does that mean he says the back has everything except that. oh and it was from an automatic 4runner can it work in Manuel 93 ex can pickup?

I believe it should work. The only thing that I would be weary of is the fact there is no pinion gear. The ring and pinion usually come in a set. Therefore you would need to purchase the pinion and then you will have an extra ring lying around. Also, if you have to put in a new pinion, the gears need to be set up again for the new pinion. This all costs money. To me, if you already have a rear 3rd, just buy new gears and have them set up for you if you don't feel comfortable doing it.

Something to think about, you will also need to do your front differential if you don't have 4.88's up there already.

All in all, it will work, but will cost about the same as just having gears done on your current 3rd member.

If its a factory 4.88 rear diff you cant get new gears(1grand from toyota......) so unless its a complete 3rd i would pass. Maybe he ment the pinion flang which is replacable. You'll also need to get the front diff from him if your ifs or regear yours. 7.5 is regearable.

I would regear. I have factory 4.88s and if i need to go taller i have to buy a rear diff and regear that one. I hate buying parts twice.

Edit: rear diff is near useless without the matching pinion. Just looked at craiglist ad.

buy the front 4.88 diff, skip the rear. only other way to get front 4.88 is to regear a front diff, find what you've found, or buy a drop-in geared unit. as you've seen, regearing isn't free, and drop-ins although expensive do save you a little (but they're brand new!). unless you break it, you will always find a buyer for a used 4.88 front IFS diff since it's so much hassle to regear.

for the rear, either buy gears/install kit and have it done for you like you priced out. make sure the gear guy you go to is reputable and will warrant his work. other option is to buy a new drop-in from someone like Marlin or TG, etc (but usually these come with lockers, which isn't a bad thing)

the factory 4.88 diffs will work in your rig. you will need to cut off the abs sensor if you don't have it. I recommend disabling the ADD system on the front diff and installing manual hubs if you don't have them yet.

Not worth it. The gears wear in pairs and are sold in pairs. You cannot mix max to make a good set.
