Starts for a couple seconds then dies!!!!!!!

my buddy has a 88 toyota p/u standard, 4x4 22re. we adjusted the valves in it, but the block didnt have the timing tab to time it at 5 degrees TDC so instead we used the distributer as a reference to where the cylinders are at. is that a reliable alternative to find TDC for the #1 cyl. if you dont have timing marks? Here is the problem befor we did the valve adj. it started and ran just fine but after it did not. so we went back and re-adj. the valves and got no change in fault. we replaced the fuel filter, pump, checked the main relay, fuel pump relay, ECU. nothing seamed to change the outcome. CAN ANYONE HELP!!!!!!!
