Starting and Stalling Issue

First, the truck is 86 22re 4Runner. I have been having some starting issues. The problem is the truck starts up but it won't start up on first attempt. On occassion it starts up on first attempt no problem. However, most of the time it takes two and sometimes three trys at starting the truck.

I have done the following to attempt to fix: (has not helped)

-Cleaned battery terminal
-New Plugs, Wires, Dist. Cap, Rotor

I am going to look into the starter but wanted to see if it could possibly be something else.

Second issue is that the truck tends to hesitate and turns off at idle or low speed. For example when I am at a stop light, backing out of garage, or moving forward below 5 miles per hour the rpm tends to jump up and down. Then the truck will shut off. It doesn't shut off consistently but it does shut off. This happens quit often when I have the a/c on too.

I have searched and read some post about TPS but not sure how to go about checking it. I am a 1 banana to 1.5 banana when comes to working on the truck. I also am limited to tools.

So what do you guys think I should do next? I like to get this issue fixed.

Thanks
Steve

change your fuel fiter. check and adjust your timing and idle speed. if none of that fixes your problem, you may have a fuel pressure problem which could be a bad-
fuel cap gasket
presure regulator
fuel pump

Thanks toyaholic!

I actually just went over the truck again w/ my friend and the truck is not hesitating. I guess new spark plugs, wires, and air fliter helped.

I still need to change out my throttle cable. It has so much play in it.

Thanks again!

no problem. the throttle cable is adjustable. change that fuel filter anyway, unless you know that it has been done recently.

The fule filter was changed 10k miles ago. It was done about 9 mos ago by previous owner. How often should the fuel filter be changed?

Do you mean excessive cranking or no cranking at all and then it miraculously starts cranking?

Fuel filters are good for MANY miles; I change every 100,000 miles.

I would have to crank it a couple times before it would start up. Now it will start right up as I turn the key.
