starting problems

i have a 88 model 22re that is giving me a fit. i have had it for about 6 months and the starter went out about 6 weeks ago. now i went to crank it yesterday and nothing. everything comes on but no clicking of solenoid. checked all the wires to starter all hooked up and good. checked the one wire to starter with a light to see if it was getting power to it. the light came on as soon as i hooked it up with key off. is it supposed to have a constant ground or is it supposed to not have a ground to it until key is turned over?

The schematic isn't exactly clear what goes on inside the starter, but it's very clear that the starter is grounded all the time. The key switch provides voltage to the starter relay which provides voltage to the starter. Inside the starter it looks like there is a relay that actually switches to provide voltage to the motor.

If I remember right the starter has a contactor inside, so really you're just providing power to the contactor, and therefore it's a 3 terminal starter. The frame provides ground IIRC.

http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1990-1995...5/contents.htm

They're complex, but the best starter tip is pay attention to which wires are for manual transmissions and for auto transmissions.

Look at sections:

E.W.D. 1990-1995::1995 4runner: Component Location
E.W.D. 1990-1995::1995 4runner: Power Source (there are two of these, the first is schematic)
E.W.D. 1990-1995::1995 4runner: Starting
E.W.D. 1990-1995::1995 4runner: Ignition
E.W.D. 1990-1995::1995 4runner: Engine Control (3VZ-E)
