I have a 86 4runner that I am having trouble with starting. When I turn the key nothing happens. If I turn the key several times it will eventually start. I can jump across the starter from bat wire to solenoid wire so I do not think it is the starter. I just cleanned the negative battery post. Is there a Little silver box on the passenger side fender that is involved with the starter. About 2 just hook up a wire staright to the solenoid and be done with it. Getting frustrating. Any help would be great.

 

Clean the positive side too. It's the one that usually needs the most attention on mine. It's been the source of all my starting troubles.

Everything clamped down as tight as you can get it also.

 

could be the ignition switch. my 89 truck does that. i have to turn the key and wiggle it a little to make contact. can't even guess what the dealership sells it for.

 

Ignition switch sounds would be a likely culprit. Run tests 5 and 6.

I just had the same problem with my 86 2WD over Thanksgiving. It was the 80AMP fuse in the fuse box located in the engine compartment. It was totally fried but still worked. That circuit sends power to the starter when you turn the ignition key to START. On my truck it's identified on the fuse box cover as GLOW AM1. It's a 12 dollar part from the dealer. To replace the fuse you have to unbolt the fuse box from the inner wheelwell and unbolt the cables that attach to it.

Take the fuse box cover off and inspect it. The top of my fuse was completely burned off but worked intermittently. If you replace it without determining and repairing the cause of why it fried, it will only fry again. I cleaned all my battery cable connections and ground and also the cable connections at the starter. Good luck. Electrical problems suck ass.

 

This must be a fairly common problem, cause my 89' just started doing the same thing. Although I'd swear it helps to let the clutch out and push it back in...Usually works for me.

 

welcome to Y/T. it is a mental thing, you know mind over matter, if you don't mind, it don't matter.

 

Went ahead and made a bypass button so those few times when it does not want to start with the key I have a back up. I notice that it happens more when it is cold outside. Also I have noticed that the starter has been sticking on when I start it and sometimes I can turn the key alll the way off and still stay on and soon it stops. I am thinking that maybe it is the switch.

My truck starter clicking problem got solved by the cutting #4 wire and hooking it directly to the + battery post.Every part has been changed (switch,battery)and starter contacts good shape.
The truck is a 1991 2wd 22re.The starter relay is located on the driver side.

 

check the + terminal on the batt first before you start tearing everything apart. chances are its a bad connection to the batt...

 

Before the 91 truck runs fine and then at times it just clicks right after turning it off.Battery post and connecter sand papered clean and I did all the trobleshooting and necessary changes like a brand new switch.
I had a 86 2wd truck that ran like that but didnt know about the wire mod.The truck would not start but click & its just by listening to the stereo with the engine off or trying to restart.I always had to jump it in gear.
Doing the wire mod after finding out the starting system is fine its a costless repair with 3 foot of wire and some soldering.
