Stalling, difficult idling at stop lights

I have an issue with the A340H transmission in my 88 22REC. The auto tranny acts like it's dragging the clutch (if it were a manual) while in drive and stopped. I don't know why this would be happening. My best guess is that the lock-up converter is not fully releasing. It idles fine while in neutral. But it slams when you put it back in drive. (Idle speed is 850.) The problem is erratic. I replaced the solenoids a couple of months ago hoping to fix the problem. But it didn't help. I suspect there's something going on in the valve body. Ideas?

Nothing unusual about the fluid. The pan didn't have anything exciting in it when I removed it to replace the solenoids.
