stalling problem...

Ive got an 87 pickup 4cyl auto tranny. I go wheelin with it more often than its on the road as it is my beater 4x4 fun truck... its got 220k on the motor and it has a stalling problem. It stalls when I try and shift from drive to say reverse L or 2, to fast (even from 2h to 4h or 4l). Im not talking trying to go in reverse while still rolling, just stopped then shifting it stalls unless I stop, let it idle a little while then shift and ease into it. Or say I come to a stop real fast it'll sometimes stall. Backing down a trail when i hit the bottom it stalled. It'll start up fine but gets worse and worse. It was bad enough one time I had to keep giving it gas while being towed (lost 4 wheel drive out on a rough trail). Where should I look first? My buddy with the same year and model truck said his used to do the same thing untill he swapped a manual tranny into it. ideas?

sorry late respond. How do I find this Ive never messed with it so im assuming its probably stock. Been dealing with cold start issues now, stalling when running would be an improvement haha
