Sqeaking Belts?

Hey guys,

I already searched this, but I couldnt find what i was looking for. If you know of anywhere else it could be found, that would be great too...

So heres the new problem.
When i turn the car on in the morning, it sounds and runs smooth. But as soon as i get to my destination (school-aprox. 10 miles away) and i get out of my car before turning it off, i listen, i can hear this squeaking. I opened the hood and it sounds like a dry squeak coming from the belts. THe car runs fine. With 140,000 miles, i just got an oil change. The timing belt was changed at 67,000 ml. So i think it is just clack of lube? I have no idea what this is, but before i bring it to a shop, i would like to get your opinions. Thanks...

-Mike

Happens with me too (squaking only at idle). I'll let you know if I figure it out if you do the same.

Possibly one of the belt tensioners/bearings. There is one that encircles the radiator inlet to the engine that tensions the timing belt. It's behind the plastic timing cover.

sounds like classic case of belt wear. check the tension. it it continues and if you don't want to replace add some belt dressing as that may help for a bit. but you'll want to replace eventually.

I looked at them today, the belts seem worn. I dont know if this is just cuase of old mud, but i just got the engine cleaned, so i figured it might be from the lack of dressings/lube. Some parts of the belts have tiny cracks.

I think i may just be in for a changing of belts.
Anyone know how much it will be to get this done??

Thanks a lot!

I had that problem before where I would a hear a squeaking or squealing sound at idle... turned out that the fan bracket bearing (piece that covers your water pump wear all your belts pass through) was going out and it actually siezed on me! killed the truck instantly. That part is like $600.00 OEM but you can find aftermarket around 100.00 or so (ebay, TAP recyclers, etc)... good luck...finding the source.. .hopefully it's your belts and not any bearings - fan bracket, idlers etc....

After several months of squealing at idle I replaced all my belts this weekend (no, not the timing belt). The squeal is now gone and it was surprisingly easy to replace the belts.

I dont think you should lube your belts, I think they need replacing.
Belt dressing is not designed for serpentine belts, btw.

This is very normal with the mid 90s v-belts on a Toyota. What you are hearing is different belts, running in different pulleys some with more wear than others and they are fighting each other because the distance one travels is not the same as the other (different radii due to wear.)

Only answer I've found over the last 15 years that fixes this is to replace ALL the belts at the same time.

On the flip side, I've never found that running it does anything but be annoying.

Now this doesn't make much sense since they drive different components. Feel free to call me an idiot if two belts actually have more than one pulley in common.

theres no reason not to change all the belts, might as well while you're in there. they're cheap enough anyway, and its a lot easier than coming back 6 months from now and realizing that a different one needs changing.

Two (three?) belts have two pulleys (crank & fan) in common...and therein lies the problem when they haven't worn at the same rate.

Mine's in buckets at the moment and I can't remember if all three belts share two pulleys or if it's only two belts. I think AC runs on it's own...can't remember for sure.
You'd only have to replace the ones that share two pulleys.
