Sputtering and Leaving Me Stranded..
First off I'm sorry for long post, but I'm trying to be as informative as possible in hopes to solve this. Only about a week ago I bought an 87 4runner. It needs a bit of r&r but it's been great so far. Except one thing. And I can't seem to figure out what is wrong.
Some times I will start it up and it runs pretty well. Other times when I start it up it won't even hold the idle. It just sputters a few times then dies. Also when I am driving it will run good one second, then I will go to give it a little more gas and it won't respond, and seems like it starts to choke. If I am stopped at a light or something and it's sputtering I have to play with the gas alot to get anywhere. If I give it to much gas it dies, if I don't give it any it dies. And when it dies, it usually take a couple minutes to get it going again. Or longer. Anyway you get the point.
I've replaced the plugs, plug wires and rotor. The guy who owned it before me said he replaced the fuel filter to no avail. The check engine light has come on. And yah. Any info is great. Thanks.

Pulling the code will tell you alot....or atleast give you a direction to go in.
Check your old plugs for their condition....if you haven't tossed them already. They will show whether you're running rich or lean, or that you may have dirty injectors. Also, peek in your throttle body and see if it's all gummy in there. And what about your air filter? You may not be getting enough air.
And congrats on your excellent buy. I love my '86!

I pulled the codes and it came up with 4-6-11. The fuel filter has been replaced. Yah I don't have the old plugs to check them. I will check my air filter, peek in the throttle body, and check the AFM. I'll let you know what I come up with.

The fuel filter is good. The air filter is clean. i checked the AFM and it's working great. What I did notice was there is some oil in the air hose. Must have blown by. Anyway I wipe it all clean and it purrs now. Must just be a build up on the injectors or somewhere in there. So besides using some fuel injector stuff, what else can I do to clean that all up?
Thanks for all your help. JP
