Did mine with the PVC cap version and it worked great.

 

I bet you could pick up an O-ring at lowes that would be the same size as the end of the PVC pipe. I've got a few pieces laying around Ill have to see if I have any thats around the right size. The lowes card I got for christmas will be put to use soon enough.

 

Same here, mine gets passed around the group all the time and still works great

 

cant i just remove the lower ball joint than the axle which will give me access to where i need to grease

 

you pump it with grease then slide the shaft in and out

 

What size bolt should I get to attach it to the CV? 12mm thread size? That seems awful big.

i just had a long arse 12mm layin around that just happened to be the PERFECT length LOL

 

oh yeah, i forgot thats its longer... i think it just uses a normal 12mm

 

What is this noise that you speak of..... I have a noise up front, I have checked, lubed, inspected and reinspected everything. The only thing I haven't done is what this thread is about. I have a 97 limited and it's driving me nuts. Can someone please describe what it sounds like when this lube job needs to be done.

I had this noise start on my 94 4runner a couple of weeks ago. Strange groan maybe?? at about 15 to 20 mph. Truck has the ADD system so hubs are always locked cv's constantly spinning. Didn't make the noise in 4hi or 4low. I asked around and then found this thread. I was looking at making the lubricator tool and thought what the heck I'll try the grease gun with needle attachment. I think the hardest part was getting the c-clip back on when the spindle was full of grease. All I did was remove the drive flange, pushed the axle in towards the center of the vehicle, stuck a 1/2" extension between the axle and back of the spindle. Then pumped the open area with grease, removed the extension and pushed the axle in and out a couple of times, greased it again and put it back together. I then drove the truck around my neighborhood for about 20 minutes keeping it between 15 and 20 mph, where the noise was the worst, and it's gone!

 

I just made the spindle tool after trying the needle. 1.5 inch pvc end cap. M8 35mm bolt into axle, grease fitting. drilled n tapped pvc for bolt and grease fitting. I cut n old inner tube for a gasket, filled it up with molly, bolted on n squirted away. I'll do other side when the dang cone washers let go.

 

This is a beautiful creation.
Just wanted to tell those guys out there that maybe don't have the tools or time to make one of these up, that sleepoffroad makes a 54mm spindle lubricator. Just stumbled across it a few minutes ago. More expensive than doing it yourself, but looks like a good alternative for the dudes that can't.

Autocorrect is annoying

 

Having trouble getting the axle all the way back out after lubing. Am I missing something obviou?. I am about a thrust washer away from being all the way out. Tried moving the A-arms around and wiggling but it seems to be stuck.

Yeah, I'm not sure what you did. It's not that complicated. Should go back in as easy as it came out.

That's a pretty expensive little tool they're selling($45!). Pretty spiffy too though...

It is a quality piece but yes quite pricey. Got it back in, it was just that the added grease created a bit of a barrier. Wiggling and squishing got it done. Thanks for the reply!

 

I'm not sure but I think this could be the source of my noise. 1992 pickup and it make a terrible intermittent noise. Automatic hubs. When I run in 4 wheel drive it seems to go away a bit (I can stop the noise by accelerating or deaccelerating most times) but then I have a terrible vibration. I can move the cv axle a lot by grabbing it near the hub, it moves around in the hub itself. The cv joints are fine. After I pulled the snap ring from the spindle I can pull the axle towards the engine side enough to look in and see no grease. I figured it was maybe bearings but now I'm not sure. Is there supposed to be that much slop in the hub where the spindle enters? Im sure I can move the spindle 1/2" all around and when I do the spline of the spindle sticking out of the front of the hub moves as well. I can actually wobble the spindle from the front of the hub before I removed the snap ring. This noise just started during a cold period. Any body been able to move the cv joint in the hub like this?

 

I want to say first off that I love your little creation Mdt_Tech I imagine that working very well. I started having that rubbing noise my self and was worried that it was going to turn into a PITA. For all of those out there that argue swapping bearings and replacing hardware is the way to go why not just try greasing things first? K.I.S.S - Keep It Simple Stupid. I don't currently own a mig/tig machine and am to lazy/cheap to drive into town to hire somebody so I started thinking. I have an idea that I tried and worked great. I used a piece of 1/2 shrink tube 3+ inches long. Put it on to the end of my grease gun and then taped it on for back up. After removing the slip ring and washer there is enough play to slide the shrink tube into the space between the spindle and axle rod and start pumping. Take it out and do the same thing 180 degrees which takes only a couple of pumps the second time proving the distribution from the first round. Worked great and cost less than a buck.
