I was having the same noise coming from my front drivers side which only happened when the hubs were locked and I wasn't putting any torgue on the wheel, rolling down hill. The bearing swap makes sense but I like to start simple and go from there. The lubricator tool is a great idea and obviously solves the problem. I don't have a welder handy and am to lazy/cheap to go have some body do it for me so I improvised a bit. I happened to have 1/2" dia shrink wrap at the house. So I cut a piece about 4" long and put it on the end of my grease gun. I applied some heat to tighten it up and then taped it to back it up. With the slip ring and the washer off I flatten the open end of the shrink wrap and fed it into the space between the axle and the spindle and then started pumping. After grease started pushing out I repeated the process 180 degrees and only had to pump a couple of times which proves that the grease is getting distributed. Put it back together took it for a spin and problem solved for less than a buck.

Here is a plastic take-off on the excellent MDT Tech idea. Get a 1 1/2 inch pvc fitting - carve out a bit of the inside of the iron pipe side. This is an iron pipe to PE transition fitting. Hammer it on the spindle. Plug the end with another fitting. Grease it. Knock it off. Do the other side. Save the fitting.
