Speedometer / trans issue

I have a 1994 4Runner with 3.0 and auto trans. When I drive, everything is ok until I have gone for about 5 minutes. Then the speedometer gets erratic and bounces all over and gears start jumping around. Almost like the trans is slipping. But it drives and shifts fine for the first few minutes. I have replaced the speed sensor in the transfer case (mount was broken in old one) and I replaced all the solenoids. Any other ideas?

I would guess the issue lies in the speedomoter or Speedo cable itself. It's kind of a b to get the inside of the dash cluster the first time you do it. You can try to wiggle the speedo cable from the engine bay side to make sure it is making good contact/ not wiggling out while you drive, but I doubt that is the problem.

Well, if Uofrdawg53 replaced the speed sensor in (the back of) the transfer case, then he doesn't have a Speedo cable. (There is a different speed sensor in the transmission, but if yours came from the transfer case you should have the right one.)

A failing speed sensor produces the symptoms you have, so if replacing the sensor didn't work I would start looking at the wiring. It sounds like you have an intermittent issue, which are tough to find, but at least do a physical inspection. And make sure the connector to the sensor is in good shape.
