Hey there everyone! I am in need of advice for my 95 SR5 yota, I just had the trans rebuilt and it runs great! although...the temp gauge and speedometer do not work...I know its not too hard to install the speedometer cable BUT I have never done one before and would appreciate tips before I begin the project.

I am very lost in why my temp gauge is not working? I replaced the cheaper sensor and nothing changed...it still reads a cold temp I have linked a few videos so you can see what I am talking about. I am very concerned about my newly rebuilt transmission and my engine because I know that they rely on these two gauges so please send me any advice and tips you can. I have to drive to indio from yucaipa tomorrow for work so wish me luck! I also have bad tires...so I hope they dont blow out. that will be very bad!

ENGINE ISSUES?

I pulled the wire off the cold start injector hoping it will help save gas until I fix my temp gauge...its very hot out here so I'm not worried about that but is this a good idea or bad?

Please don't take movies while you're driving. We believe you when you say the speedometer and temperature gauge don't work.

I suspect (but I'm not sure) that you have the electronic speedometer; wired not cabled. First check to see if it's plugged in (back of transfer case on passenger side). If it is plugged in follow the manual to test the transducer.

There are at least three temp sensors in the coolant manifold at the after end of the block; only one of them is for the temp gauge (others are for the ECM). You won't save any gas by disconnecting the CSI (unless something else is screwed up so badly the truck won't even start). It has it's own temp sensor/timer, and it only works when you're cranking.

All of these tests require a multimeter; if you don't have one you're wasting everyone's time (especially yours). Remember that the phrase "throwing parts at it" IS a perjorative; you don't want to be like that.

 

I appreciate the concern but I was plenty focused with driving safely before video quality...I made them on my first drive with the rebuilt trans so I wanted to shoot the RPMs to show a buddy of mine.

I'm not the the best at narrating videos and after watching them I should have prepared myself because I sounded like an idiot..I have had a great deal of things on my mind...I am moving tomorrow after work so I'm stressing on things.

I do have a variety of meters and I should have added that I know the CABLE to the speedometer is broken.

I have never replaced one before so I was hoping to snag a few TIPS or TRICKS on replacing it quicker so I can get my repairs completed in one day since I work quite a bit.

I know I can find info on this in YotaTech forums but prefer to post my own threads so the information is not mixed up. I found a guy in these forums advising another to disconnect the CSI to save gas...I noticed a difference but I assume that is only because my transmission has been rebuilt.

Please do not reply if you feel I may be wasting your time in any way.

 

I dont know the 3.0, but am sure yours is electrical driven speedo. I would suggest pulling your guage cluster and reseating your ribbon cables and seeing if that helps with the speed and temp sensor. See if they share the same circuit and would suspect fuse. Otherwise, it will be chasing down the circuit with a meter. If nothing else this will give a bump to your thread and someone else might know more that could help.

 

Thank you! although I do believe it's a cable. I learned they tend to break if not dry lubed..or if oils and dirt get in.

I did check it once when it was bouncing around and it was oily. A while after that on the freeway it stopped working altogether, the engine light came on and it started misfiring but after fixing my trans the misfiring stopped...

I am curious about the temp gauge still...I hope it just needs the temp sensor sender replaced or whatever its called..it has a single wire that attached to it...hope that the 25 dollar part will do the trick...

so many things fixed on this rig and so many other more things still need to be fixed!
I'm getting a hard clunk when I shift to Drive...guess my Ujoints need replacing? oh well...

have you checked the tvv? mine was broken and the hoses were all cracked but im going to replace it when the valve comes in. I am curious on how the speedometer turns out because mine is giving me the same probems as well.

 

OK it's simple...if your gauge is not reading the correct temp then this is what you need to replace...looking under the hood, the one to the right(driver side) of it sends the temp info to the computer/transmission....very simple very cheap.now whats the one on the left side(passenger side)??

 

I'm sorry what do you mean by tvv? never heard that term used before.

yeah im not looking forward to replacing the cable...shouldnt be too hard but not a fun fix for sure....

are you talking about the ones with the nipples that connects to the charlcoal canister purge valve?
