I have a 1988 Pickup that came factory with a cable driven speedometer, i put a 1992 Transfer-case in it which has the hookup for an electric speedometer. How can i en corporate a Speedometer for my truck?

 

Same transfer case? If so then it couldn't be any easier. Both speedometer connectors are gear driven. One drives the electronic unit which converts the rotations into an electrical pulse, and the other simply drives the mechanical cable. The electronic unit assembly bolts right in place of the mechanical cable connector unit assembly.

1. Remove the bolt that holds the electronic unit assembly to the new transfer case tailhousing.
   
2. Remove the electronic unit assembly from the new transfer case tailhousing.
   
3. Remove the bolt holding the tab which keeps the cable connector unit assembly from falling out of the old transfer case tailhousing.
   
4. Remove the cable connector unit assembly from the tailhousing of the old transfer case.
   
5. Place the cable connector unit assembly into the new transfer case tailhousing.
   
6. Replace the holding tab and bolt for the cable connector unit assembly on the new transfer case.
   
7. Connect the speedometer cable to the new transfer case.

I've never done this before, so I can't guarantee it will work. But I can't imagine it won't either. IF the transfer cases are the same model. If not, then you'll have to install an instrument panel/gauge cluster/combination meter from a 92 with an electronic speedometer. Which may mean replacing the entire dash too, because I don't think you'll be able to fit a 92 in an 88.

I would try to put the cable on it but i no longer have the cable. is it possible to use the existing electronic wires to put in an after-market electric speedometer?

 

AFAIK, no.

But, you can buy a wireless electronic speedo. If you don't already have one.

It's called a GPS.

 

I am aware of using a gps. However a vehicle needs a speedometer and odometer to pass inspection in the state of New Hampshire. I am going to try adapting the 1988 speedometer mechanism to the 1992 Transfercase.

 

why not just go to a wrecking yard and get a cable? i had a bad cable and got one for 20 bucks just had to remove it myself. but u can also get whatever other items u need to get it the way it should and be done.

 

I recently purchased a new/used cable for my 88 off ebay. Which would be a good place to start looking for one.

 

all the Toyotas in junkyards around here are stripped of motors/trans/tcases and the speedo cable are discarded in the process. Ebay is a good idea. i went to the Toyota Stealership today and they want 100 for a new one.
