Keep your button, not your buzzer!
hey everyone,
i have and '86 yota pickup, when i got it it had that famous annoying-as-hell buzzer and if you have one you know what im talking about and you problably want to get rid of it. if you just go and pull it out then the button that turns on the dome light when the driver's door is opened stops working. heres how to get rid of the buzzing and keep your button!
1-locate your buzzer and disconnect it
this pic was taken from underneath the steering wheel:
2-once you get the buzzer out take off the back plate that was facing the floor of the truck. i used a screwdriver under one of the little notches on the plate and just pryed back on it.
3-after that you will see a little green circuit board:
if you turn the buzzer over and shake it, the circuit board should slide out. if not you can also push on the posts where the wiring harness was connected to slide it out.
4-when you get the circuit board out, you will see a little motor with two small plates that cause the buzzing. (they are circled in the picture)
you then want to bend the arm with the plate down like this:
5-Put the plastic cover back on and install the buzzer back in your truck.
now you have a dome light button that works and a buzzer that does not! YAAAY!!!

Alright, I finally got around to doing this. As it happens, I have my dash removed already so I was able to remove the buzzer as a unit. Without having to disassemble it in the vehicle. Much easier.
Here's what that looks like.
Here's what's inside.
There's the buzzer.
There's the buzzer defeated.
Where it is next to the steering column, seen from above.
Where it is next to/above the steering column, seen from below. Sorry for the blur, you get the idea.

Yeah, well just wait 'till you try getting at it. I took a look under there way back when and decided, "screw it...it ain't that annoying".
Then I got a little reminder this afternoon, and decided "now's as good a time as any". I knew it'd be alot easier since the dash was still out and I could attack it from a better angle, from above that is.

On my Tacoma I only had to pull one panel. 5 bolts and 2 screws left this exposed:
All I had to do was cut one wire (green w/red) and no more door buzzer.
Mine wasn't that annoying though.
The ones on the older trucks are like a bee next to your ear.

I kind of like the buzzer now that I've goofed a time or two... it reminds me not to be an idiota and lock my keys in side (luckily I keep a spare in my wallet but sadly it only helps when my wallet is also not locked inside)... I'd prefer a nice chime type thingy or something maybe one could be lifted from an NA car noise box and macgyverd in... but not the old K-Car "The door is a-jar" robo voice...

I cut the wire to the door switch, and wired in a rocker switch that's flush mounted in the kick panel. I listen to music a lot with the doors open, so I just click the switch and the buzzer goes off. Before I get back in the truck, click it back on so on the occasional "moment" I don't leave the keys in the ignition.
Been that way for several years.

That's a concern that I no longer have. There's a method of getting into the cab of a pickup when the doors are locked and you don't have a key. It doesn't involve breaking a window, using a wire coat hanger, a slim jim, or a wireless device to unlock the doors. But I'm not tellin'.
