Speedometer not working sometimes.

Hello I have a 94 22re 4x4. Occasionally when I get in the truck, especially on humid days or wet days my speedometer which is electronic, won't work for several minutes. My odometer works but not the speedo. Anyone else have this issue?

"Speedometer doesn't work sometimes" IS the classic sign of a failing VSS1. But since your odometer continues to work, it must be getting the VSS1 signal. So I expect you have a problem inside the combination meter.

For which, unfortunately, I have no help.

Thanks. I was thinking it might be something with the signal inside the dash because of the odometer working.

Sometimes the solder joints on the backside crack and need to be re soldered. There is a thread on here that explains it.

My speedo does the same thing. I have learned to live with it. I tried checking the ground by the left kick panel, but it was clean and there was no change.

I did not want to tackle the combination meter removal. I "solved" the problem by picking up an old Garmin Nuvi 200 on eBay for about $20. It gives me a MPH readout until the speedo "wakes up".

i have the same issue with my 3vze 92 4runner, ive replaced the speed sensor on the back of the box (electronic) but no change. the odometer still works but my speedo has gone from working intermittently to not working at all recently.

Maddad, do u hapen to have a link for the solder joints, i tried searching numerous keywords (speedo, speedometer, instrument panel, cluster, solder, clean) but couldnt find anything.

aside from the solder joins, are there any other common issues like resistors or a second sensor in the cluster that can be fixed relatively easily?

there is an electrical part which burns out, it's common, you may be able to find a working used speedo. When mine burned out (speedo dead, ODO working) I took the opportunity to replace the cluster with a SR5 cluster, to get the tack and other gauges. I had to re-calibrate the tach and speedo. It's all posted up here for the conversion. There was a place I Florida I believe which rebuilds the speedos, just do a search.

i already have the sr5 cluster, i dont really want to buy another one if this can be fixed by replacing a resistor or something simple like that. I couldnt visually see anything 'burnt out' on the circuit board itself, although i did find some corrosion/buildup. it almost looked like water damage, i gave it a gentle clean with some very fine wet n dry and then went over it with a q-tip and some contact cleaner. im yet to drive it since to c if it has helped at all. i also gave the pin-in contacts on the back of the cluster- on the circuit film, a light touch up aswell

using contact cleaner on the board won't help. Most likely a burnt out part, might as well commit to having it rebuild or find a used replacement.

I knew that the contact cleaner wasnt going to be a magical fix, but i thought it may have helped a little. Its all back together and still only working intermittently. Found a place in perth that can fix it, but its a $165+gst job.

I can't find the post i read it on. But do remember they say look for some fine cracks in the solder. I tried searching for it also.
