Speedometer not working all the time.

I have a 92 toyota pick up 3VZE 5 speed manual and my speedometer works about half the time but the odometer works all the time. Could this just be a simple speed sensor fix?

A buddy of mine just worked on his wife's 94 with the same problem. It isn't the sensor, but rather a problem with the cluster. If you pull the cluster out, you will probably find some bad traces on the back that need repair.

I forget the year exactly but they went from a cable driven speedo to a sensor. Does your have the cable sticking out of the passenger side of the transmission?

Not sure about the cable on the transmission but there is a cable on the transfer case out put and it looks like some sort of sensor. I'll look again to double check

By "cable", I think StewsR is talking about the mechanical speedo drive, not the electrical wire. Both plug into the same place in the back of the transfer case, but I think you've got the electrical sensor.

While failure of that sensor is a common problem at this vintage, it would take out the odometer too. If you're sure that the odometer keeps working when the speedometer drops to zero, I'd start with Cyberman's suggestion.
