I have a 95 4runner, 5spd. My current gear is marked 11/33, and my speedometer reads 35mph while actual speed (by radar) is 40. Does anyone know the gear # I need and where to get it?

 

what is your axle ratio and tire size? I can figure out which gear you need... no guarantees it fits into your sensor because it doesn't appear much people change the speedo gears!

I also "rediscovered" late last night that from 93 onwards, the 4runners switched to electric speedo... so that converter box used by outlawmike won't work on the 95

I decided I'm going to splurge the 20 bucks for a new speedo gear from toyota... after triple checking and double checking all the different speedo related parts on the runner, I'm fairly confident that I can swap my speedo gear to a different one... you probably cannot use a 4WD speedo gear with a RWD one and vice versa... same thing between 90-92 and 93-95


oh yeah, I have an electric speedo (I don't have a mini truck or runner, but the speedo gear is off the runner), so that mechanical box is also out of the question for me... and I don't feel like spending lots of money on a speedo correction box when it is a lot cheaper to just swap the speedo gear and look factory!

 

there's a bunch of speedo gears for the 2nd gen runners also... five speedo drive gears and a whole bunch of driven gears for the automatic...
16 teeth... 6:16
17 teeth... 6:17

I mixed these up for all years of the 2nd gen RWD and 4WD, before I discovered the 90-92 and 93-95 differences

the manual has eight speedo drive gears and also a bunch of driven gears:

27 teeth... 27:11
15 teeth
19 teeth
29 teeth... 29:11
30 teeth... 30:11
31 teeth... 31:11
32 teeth... 32:10
32 teeth... 32:11
34 teeth... 34:10
34 teeth... 34:11????
again, mixed up with all years and 4WD and RWD

 

Thanks for your replies, I really appreciate the help. I had called my local dealership and according to the parts guy ..." Toyota made a 4cyl gear and a v6 gear, which did I want" He then recommended that I take it to a speedometer shop. They want $125 ... OUCH! I have 265/75/16 (32s) and 3.91 gears with a 5spd. I went from 31/10.50/15 to 265/75/16.

 

you need a 27 teeth driven gear according to my calculations
the parts catalog shows a 27 teeth gear... it's 33403-39135... it's off a 1990 RN80 (short bed hilux/pickup) 4 speed manual RWD with the 195-70/14 tires and 22R-E....

I don't know if the RWD gear can go into the 4WD... but if you're willing to give it a try and your dealer is willing to take back any returns, go for it! I searched through many cars in the catalog and couldn't find anything 4WD that uses a 27 tooth gear, so if you're going to try something, that is probably the only one.... obviously, if you have RWD, the chances of it working is even greater in any case, it's still a lot cheaper than $125 if it works!

I'm going to go ahead and get the 19 tooth gear from the dealer myself... it'll take a couple of weeks to get in (which is also why I want to find used)

 

im having same issue just got a ticket im way off 88 toyota running 36s and 4:10s but i need to know which gear and were to get

 

buy a GPS.. 10x more accurate, 10x less hassle.

You can get a decent GPS for less than $100, cheaper than a ticket and points on the insurance

 

Can you tell which gear the trucks that came with 4.56 gears and 31" tires had?

I think my trucks been messed with before. It had 4.10 gears and the factory sized small tires(as indicated on the door plate) however the speedometer was very inaccurate. When I put the larger 31" tires on the speedometer became accurate(checked via gps) even tho it still had 4.10 gears. Now I have changed the gears to be a factory setup(4.56 with 31x10.5" tires) and the speedo is out again (it reads around 65 when I'm going 60)

 

i got a ticket about 20years ago in my j**p cj,..i went 2 a shop that does speedo calibrations...first i changed gear to make it read lower (less) than i was driving...(speeding)...it made my speedometer off by 15mph...slower! then i had it calibrated by shop..with calibration certification i went 2 court they dropped the charges.

 

Got a refurbished GPS for $69..plugs into the cig lighter socket.

 

I just had my ring and pinion changed from 4.10 to 4.88.
Now the speedometer is fast by about 10mph.

1986 - 22re - 4spd auto - 4.88 rear end - 14 inch wheels - 185R14 commercial tires.

Call Chuck at Commercial Speedometer in Sacramento CA @ 916 371 5873 and have him build an adapter for you. It goes between the cable and the housing of your transmission. I found him from another post on here. Total cost shipped is about 130 bucks. Same day shipping. Instantly brought my speedometer to exactly where I was. Motorhome, just like you.
