My speedo cable more than squeaked in my 85. I finally figured out the housing had deteriorated from the heat of the exhaust manifold, allowing the cable to wear through the plasted insulation and start rubbing on the braided reinforcement wire within the housing its self. I picked up a used cable for like $20 and swapped it out, it's a fairly simple process. But you have to open up the dash to get the cable end properly installed in the speedo.

Does your speedo "bounce" when it's making that noise? Mine did

How do you get the grease inside the cable? Do you just force it in there with a grease gun?

I've heard you can pull speedo cable out of the housing, lube them (with whatever kind of lube) and install them. But you can't do that with Toyota speedo cables. Though it would be nice!

Don't know it you're having same issue, but mine would bouce intermittently as well as make noise randomly. There was never any rhyme or reason to it.
