Smile speddometer cable

My speedometer stopped working, now the check eng. light comes on at normal temp and I have a thumping noise from the front passenger side that is very intermittent. Are they related in some way???

I'd say no, but the first thing you should do is pull codes. Then pull the dash and/or transfer case end of the speedo cable and inspect.

Yeah you can still pull codes. Look up how to cross the terminals on the diagnotic terminal and you can tell by the flashing check engine light.
For example it will flash twice, then a slight pause then flash 5 times. That would be a code 25.

And the dash is pretty damn easy to take apart.

When my cable broke, it would throw a code. If your cable got severed, maybe it's banging around. But that's a long shot.

Mine broke a few weeks ago it is also a 1990 and had 330,000 miles on it. I can hear it making noise in the dash but I do not have a engine light on. It is a 22re not that I know if it makes any difference. Some day I will get around to pulling it apart although I am starting to get used to the noise and it bugs the hell out of passengers

Where did you get your cable? I've been having trouble finding one!
