Special Service Campaign for 90-95 4Runners, 89-95 Trucks and 93-98 T100s
#561
I called both of my local Toyota dealerships today and ask about my 94 4Runner and both of them said "there are no recalls available for a vehicle that old." Obviously that is BS and I tried to explain that but only met resistance from the service dept. As a matter of fact both of them were down right arse holes. I know they must be stressed with all that is going on with Toyota right now but that isn't my fault. I thought Chevrolet service writers were bad.....ughhh!
Anyway....anyone have any other suggestions on how I can find out any info for my 94? Thanks

I just got off the phone with the 800 number and the guy told me that the recall ended in 2006, and that there were no service campaigns still in effect for 2nd gen runners.
Anyone know anything different? The above posts are only a few days old.
Help.

yeah, the recalls ending in 2006 doesn't make sense. i got the relay rod replaced on my 4Runner last year and they sent me the notice in the mail a few days before i went to get it fixed.

Guys,
Hope this isn't a repost but i found it today:
Toyota announced Tuesday that it will issue a voluntary "Special Service Campaign" in co-operation with NHTSA. The campaign involves certain power-steering equipped 1989-1996 4Runner SUVs, compact pick-ups and T-100 pick-ups (see update/edit below)
In these vehicles, a crack can develop in the steering relay rod if the steering wheel is turned repeatedly under conditions requiring extreme force, such as when the vehicle is stopped. In the worst possible case, the company said, the rod may fracture causing a loss of steering control.
Owners of these vehicles will be notified by mail, Toyota said, beginning in mid-September. Customers with questions are directed to contact Toyota customer service at 800-331-4331.
EDIT:
I called 800-331-4331 and got the years clarified. They are:
89 - 95 Toyota trucks with 4WD and power steering
90 - 95 Toyota 4Runners
93 - 98 Toyota T100 trucks
I got through to a phone rep who said that it's best to call in with your VIN because not all of the vehicles within those model/year ranges (above) will be covered. He said that it depends on where and when the vehicle was manufactured.

wrong post
I'm sorry I thought I was replying to a post for the newer 4runners being involved in the newer ball joint recall for the tundra's and sequoia's. Yes your 4runner is involved in the 50n relay rod recall. A word of advice, spray down your tie rods several times before you have the work done with rust penetrant. Toyota does not require the dealership to do the alignment if the tie rods are rusted frozen or if they have excessive play in them. Be prepared, they will try to sell you an idler arm and tie rod assemblies. They do this so toyota can make some of that money back. As far as this and other recalls expiring, they will eventually but not any time soon. They are not required to make recall parts by law forever. A lot of original toyota recalls including up to the toyota early box vans have expired.

My contention is that the alignment was fine, and there was no need for the adjusters to function until it had to be taken apart because of Toyota's design/manufacturing mistake.

I had my 4Runner done yesterday and they just replaced the relay rod and I don't think they did an alignment. They wanted me to get the headgasket done, but I said I would wait. Its done, and it cost Toyota $242.

I'm going to get my steering rod done on wed, april 7. Hopefully they throw in the free tie rods and the free alignment. That would be badass. I'm also going to ask about the head gasket, but From what I could find on the internet, they don't really honor that anymore. Is that correct, or are my findings wrong? I also read somewhere that if they do the headgasket, they'll do any resulting damage from the bad gasket, usually on cylinder #1 and #6. The lady at the dealership said the only one i'm eligible for was the steering relay rod, but I'm gonna ask about the headgasket when I'm there because I don't know if its been done, and would be kickass if they did it.

Just called the 800 number 'bout my 4Runner, and both my recalls were already performed. You can also go to toyota.com/recall and enter your vin #, and that will tell you if any recall worked has been performed......
