spare tire

how do you remove the spare tire from the 2nd gen other then cut the cable holding it up. i stuck the little funny rod thing that toyota supplies through the whole in the bumper and cant see where to put it in too on the gearbox thing. can someone please help me out here!! its either me get it off or ruin a perfectly good box by cuttin the cable off. thanks.

The rod goes in the bumper hole and all the way to the left (driver's side). Look at the bottom of the picture in the link below. You can see the rod connected to the lowering mechanism.

Thats only if you have the 31 inch tire package. If you have the 225 tire package then it goes straight forward.

hmmm wow im guessin i got the 31 inch tire package cuz there aint nuthin if i poke it straight forward. they made two different types of them? mine is a 95 SR5 4wd, so what would that be?

If your spare is a 31 inch tire then do what Chickenlover says.
