Ok you guys that have a nice polished 3.0 and don't mind doing a little more polishing, you may be interested in this:

Here's a thread going about it over on CT:
http://www.customtacos.com/forum/showthread.php?t=81996

I believe this would let you eliminate the whole AFM and let you custom tune the air/fuel ratio on your 3.0. Gadget has found that custom tuning some of the newer stock NA trucks can gain about 15 HP over the stock ECU fuel maps. I think there is a possiblility of also gaining some MPG too since the stock ECU runs very rich in open loop. I know many of you run a lot in open loop because WOT is the only way to get the 3.0 up that hill right.

Anyway just an idea, I have nothing to gain from this but someone who's brave may want to try it.

Oh you would also need a wide band A/F ratio gauge for tuning so figure in $$$ for that too. Here's a good choice on that: http://www.urdusa.com/product_info.p...s_id=540003768

this is a MAP based piggyback. There are many products like this on the market like Megasquirt, Split Second, etc that use MAP, MAF, or TPS sensors.

These types of systems are used with great success on many engines. no reason it can't be put on a 3vze, but i've always understood one of the main restrictions on this engine is the entire intake.

I wanted more out of my 3.0 too, so I bought a Supercharged '98 4Runner

Oh ok, I didn't know that. This was the first one I happen to notice that would replace a flap (AFM). I'm not sure where all the restrictions are, I'm pretty sure the AFM is a big one though just by looking at the tiny opening. I seem to remember EB saying how small the exhaust valves are compared to everything else (many have installed his OS valves on here).

In any case even with all the resrictions don't you think a custom tune could help?

the "barn door" flap on an AFM certainly is a restriction. MAF sensors are an improvement. with a MAP sensor or TPS/RPM calculation, you can run a straight, huge intake tube. the next restriction will be the intake manifold.

with a fell tuned piggyback, you would probably notice quicker on/off throttle inputs

Looks like a cool option, and not a bad price considering FAST(or simaler setups) are $1000+. They mention forced induction though, but you're doing FI you need more than just fuel, you need timing control too.

I don't have a 3.0 anymore but I'd be curious to see how a 3.0 would respond to one of these.

Right you are, this one does the timing map too and it does work for a distributor:

Most of the people that I've seen try piggybacks that integrate with the 22re/3.0 AFM have not been happy with the results. I don't know the particulars, but my understanding is that these motors use very unconvential signals that aren't easily manipulated.

The later link - full ECU replacement *speed density* looks like a viable alternative, although I'd want to see some references on it.. It's priced to come in under SDS.

As I understand it this doesn't integrate with the AFM, it totally replaces the AFM.

Wont work, I printed and read all the spects needed, It will not work on 12v sensor systems, Hence the VAFM and TPS.
If you can revamp those 2 things to work with 5v then you have a problem of the ECU not working with them.

If you eliminate the ECU, AFM and TPS all together and start from scratch with the MAP sensor it can be done.
I was so hoping this system would have worked.

As I read more, they're both piggybacks.
No, MAP-ECU2 is a piggy-back ECU that allows you to modify many parameters but retain the drivability of the OEM ECU. For example, your OEM ECU still fires the fuel injectors so if you install larger injectors, they need to be the same type.
As stated above, may not work with a 12v AFM system.. Might ask them about getting it to work with 12v systems, you certainly could step it down via voltage divider, but I don't think you'll get it to "trick" the factory ECU.

Well, that's too bad. It would have been interesting to see.

I'd rather put my $400 to a sbc or 4.3 vortec...

The 3VZE VAFM and TPS sensor both operate on the 0-5V scale.

so is there anyway to bypass the afm and put a big intake pipe without the bulky afm?
