I'm very familiar with that smell... I spill cheap vodka onto the cloth seat in my 'Runner everytime I drive home. jk if you're a cop BTW.
x2 on the exhaust. Lemme go off on a tangent right quick...
My project car is a 1973 Datsun Z with rotten weatherstripping and a large rear hatch. This car runs particularly rich and the exhaust fumes find their way into the cabin of my car. It is a horribly sour smell and, if I'm foolish enough to leave the windows up, my eyes will begin to water. Like ammonia to the face!
So fast forwarding to your 92 Runner my proposal is that you drive around with the rear window down, or weatherstripping is failing, or there is a hole in the floor somewhere that fumes are travelling through. And a vehicle with 300,000 Kanadian Miles (when is your country going to assimilate to MPH?!?!) is quite possibly running a strong fuel mixture, or a failing cat (as suggested by the previous poster).
That is my prognosis. JK on the Canadian bashing.

Well no thankfully im not a cop,i dont get a burning feeling anywhere it just smells. i have been driving with the back window down alot lately, i also removed my rear bumper and when i did that, cut my exhaust back to above the axle, not sure if that helps. I also have no idea why canada doesnt switch back i know mph much better than kmh, so silly

You said that you cut the exhaust back to above the axle. That is your problem right there, the exhaust is building up under your truck and getting into the cab. There is a reason why the exhaust comes out from under your truck behind the rear tire, and now you know why. Have the exhaust pipe put back the way it was before you cut it and that will fix the problem you created.
