I'm replacing a bad front U-joint on the rear driveshaft of my 86 4X4 pickup and I noticed that one of the holes on the slip yoke is worn. (Stub shaft, whatever it's called) Before I head to the junk yard to search for a replacement, I'd like to know what years and models I should be looking for. Thanks!

 

Year isn't as big a factor as 4x4 or 2x4, auto or manual, v6 or 4 cyl. I doubt they will sell you just a slip yoke. You will probably have to get the whole drive shaft. Make sure you factor in getting it balanced and phased as the places I got mine from didn't even feel that taking out the slip yoke and putting it back in where ever was that big of a deal, but it can make some vibrations still that will wear out your u-joints. As for matching it up, i would take some handy photos with you of your existing one as the flanges and a couple other things change in appearance to what won't work.

 

Thanks for replying. I hope to get lucky and find one at a Pick-n-Pull, where I'd just be able to buy a slip yoke alone....but I'm not holding my breath! If a yard will only sell me the entire drive shaft, maybe I'd just be better off getting a new slip yoke from the local driveline shop and having them balance the whole thing at the same time. I'll compare prices and get it figured out.
