I was putting the crawler cam (engnbldr) back in for the Kokopelli Run/camping trip. I don't know what the hell happened but the valve wont pop back up.

Needless to say I'm not going to Moab this weekend. :mad::mad:

 

Have you tried tapping it with a rubber mallet, to see it it'll seat?

 

Maybe a chunk of carbon or something?

Or trash?

 

Did you drop a nut/bolt down the intake manifold?

 

tapped it and it just went down further. the spring is not broken. pulled the plug and there is something in there but I think it may just be the valve. I cannot rotate the engine 360 any more either, by hand. The motor has 11k miles on it and I just had the head off a month ago. Ran fine before I decided to change out the cam, then this happened while changing the cam.

 

Start it up and let things work out naturally. Then post up the pics.

 

Uh, naturally might be bad.

Best to find out why it's stuck.

Is it an interference engine?

 

Yes.

I wouldn't try to start it. Heck, I bent my valves with the starter without the engine even running.

My wife is in Portland on business and he was kind enough to drop the parts off at the hotel so that they will be here Monday. WOO HOO

So I'm pulling the head and am going to see what the damage is. Hopefully I can get by with just replacing the guide and valve.

You really should have tried to find out if something was keeping the valve open, before assuming it was sticking. Time to invest in a borescope!

 

It's bent and the piston has a mark where they made contact. I have it apart and rolled it on the table, it's bent.

The gide showes signs of damage so it will have to be replaced as well.

sucks I've only got 11000 miles on the motor.

 

When you replaced the cam, did you torque down the head without indexing the cam to the crank?

 

*Looks like my son Tod gets a bonus brownie point here. Now Tod DID explain to you about making sure that the cam is in time with the block before bolting down the head?

Typically that is what we see happen, the rockers draw the valves open and one can get bent if snugged down with the cam out of time.

*So. Check ALL the rest of the valves for being bent, that stuck one is just a warning if this is what happened.

I think what happened is that I wasn't paying attention enough to the rear rocker arms and the position they were in when bolting down the assembly. So the rocker set down between the lip of the valve and the spring retainer. when I torqued it down I heard a ping (the sound of metal breaking under tension) Right then and there I knew something had gone wrong. so I inspeceted everything and found the rocker not on top of the valve but to the side of it. When I rotated the engine once by hand (ratchet) it sealed the fate of the valve and the guide (I dont' know why the hell I continued dumb moment I guess). It put enough lateral pressure on the valve to bend it and crack the guide at the snap ring.

Thank you guys so much for your help. My wife returned from her trip with the new parts and I am headed over to the local machine shop to have the new guide put in.

Thank you for the advice. I will heed your warning when reassembling. I poped all of the other valves with a wood block and a ball peen to make sure that they returned to their seated position and so far so good. I wonder if it would be prudent (after scenario previously posted) to have all of them checked when in the shop?
