Got my boy his first truck. 89 toyota 4x4
Got a question folks. The truck has no absorption to bumps at all. To my knowledge the truck has never been lifted and its got regular street tires on it. Do you think it has original factory shocks?? If I need to change them, do I need to change just the front to, thats where we are filling the stiffness. Lastly, do you recommend any basic shocks. Not looking for anything special th ought...

 

Chances are good they are the originals. Alot of people overlook them. The original Toyota shocks should be made by KYB, so if you order some of those off Rockauto.com, you can get them for cheap and not stray too far from OEM

 

ON mine, as soon as I removed the old shocks, it was obvious one was really bad...


Speaking of "basic", I decided on Gabriel Max Control 77479 (Compressed 9.04", Extended 14.14") for mine. Reasonable price, I like the collared bushing and just right for my travel (stock 1986 22RE). SO if you're looking for basic shocks, my write-up may work for you.

I replaced mine with KYB Gas adjust and am pretty happy with them
Mostly street driving, not allot of serious off-road

Cool. How did your old ones look like? Did they compress and extended after a while or did thy stay compressed?

 

O man, they didnt move when you try to cycle them..they would cycle but wouldn't go back

 

Good to know. Yeah, guess that's one practical way to test the shocks- actually taking them off.
