shifting problems

I just bought an '87 4runner (22re,5spd). First thing is the tranny doesn't fit. Let me explain, If you remove your shifter console you have the shifter boots for the tranny and t-case which has a metal piece around it. That metal piece has holes in it to screw it to the floor. Well when I removed mine there was a hole cut forward on the original and the metal piece was only screwed to the front 4 holes. How could this happen? Are some trannies shorter than others? Also I can't shift into 5th gear. Before anyone says it, the bushings are fine. Every other gear is fine. No, nothing is in the way. There is plenty of clearance around the shifter. Any of you gurus figure this out?

What model transmission is it? Does the truck has PRND2L on the gauge cluster (indication of auto->std trans swap)? Have you tried calling/asking the PO what he knew about it?

I think I could figure that out. No. the PO traded the truck and let it set for 6 months. He never even drove it. I'm not complaing to must though, for $1800 it was a steal.

It wasn't an insult to your intelligence, merely a possible explanation.

Uness it had an engine swap where they used a different set of mounts (there are two sets on the 22re, one in front, which would put the engine back in the bay, and one in back, which would put it forward in the bay. There was a post about it a while back in the 86-95 section. If not that or a transmission swap, there should be no good reason why it would be out of place.
