the engine started revving by itself very quickly, it will rev up then down about once a second. this morning i noticed the it was running hot so i suspect the thermostat. sound right?

i have a '95 4runner 4V

thanks in advance
(im a newby, so try not to mention too much technical stuff)

About the reving, it may be caused by a faulty TPS sensor. This will have nothing to do with the overheating though. It cant hurt to replace an $8 thermostat just to justify your suspesion. Another thing that you might want to look at is the temp. control sensor. This unit tells the comp. to adjust the engine to run at certain temps.

thanks for replying.

can you tell me a little bit more about the TPS? what it is, where it is, how much it costs for part and labor. how hard is it to do it myself (im not completely stupid, i managed to do quite a bit and know nothing about it).

i read up on it a little bit and it has something to do with the injector and the car's computer. but if i were to pop open the hood, where would i look to find it?

thanks

My 92 with a 22RE does the same thing. I got the code for the TPS and the temp sensor. Talking to a another toy-owner they told me top off the coolant, this cured the problem.
Mine runs hot also. I have not dug into to far, but I beleive the headgasket or the head is faulty.

the coolant didnt solve the problem. i didnt fill it to the brim of the plastic container though, only half way to where the line indicates.

in anycase, i dont think thats what the problem is. My dad says it might be an electronic issue, meaning it has something to do with the computer?

what was that TPS thing you guys were talking about?

could there be a leak of engine coolant in the carburator? when i went to fill the coolant, it was empty!

i dontknow what it can be

thanks in advance

I recently bought a '94 pickup with a 22RE from a local used car lot. Luckily I got a 90 day warranty. After I had it about 4 weeks I had a surging idle problem. It would run at about 1300 until I put my foot on the brake, then it would drop to 1000. At stoplights it would surge up and down from 1000 to 1300 while I had my foot on the brake. Turned out to be a blocked coolant passage in the cold air idle up valve (not sure if that's the official name, but it's the valve that bumps up the idle when the engine is cold). With the blocked passage, the valve wouldn't shut itself off. It's all cleaned out and works fine now.

I don't know if it's related or not, but right after this problem started my head gasket blew. Again, luckily I had the 90 warranty, and now my truck runs great.

ya

First 2 things to check are your idle screw. Common problem is them backing off. tighten er up. probably the most common sympton and solution for this condition.

unrelated but make sure your throttle cable is tightened up as well.

Alright a month or two ago my truck just started running funny......i'd try going and it would bogg down but once i hit 2500/3000 RPM it would shoot up like VTEC. When in idle it boggs to all most 400-450 RPM, and i don't have a cam.....so eventually i through a code.....which was the coolant temp sensor. I figured whatever i'll just clear it and it'll go away and it did but now i've thrown code for a O2 sensor twice.

so i took it up to my friends work and we hooked up a scanner and i was running rich it never went to lean at all. So we measured the voltage of both coolant temp sensors and one was faulty the one under the throttle body. i've now gone to TWO stores and the dealer and they all have the small sized sensor.........if anyone knows if theres another name for it......or knows what i'm talking about....umm let me know thanks

I had that same idle surging problem about a year ago. Cleaning the throttle body fixed it for me.

Do the free stuff first. Check for vacuum leaks. See if a vacuum hose is disconnected. Spray some starting fluid around your intake, throttle body, and vacuum hoses. If your surging goes away for a bit and your idle drops, you gotta leak. Get some gasket sealer.
