hey i am thinking about buying a 4runner that is leeking power steering fluid, he says when he pours the fluid in the jus leeks out under neeth the car. so i am thinking it might be the power steering pump what do you guys think? if it is the power steering pump is that an easy intsallation?

Not really what I'd call EASY. A pump will run you around $200 from the dealer. It's a PITA to install. Make sure it is leaking from the PUMP and not the HOSES.

I would bet its a hose. Check the hoses carefully, theyre a lot easier to install than the entire pump, and a lot cheaper.

Its relatively easy to change. Is the fluid leaking from the passenger side or drivers side? If its the drivers...check the steering box for leakage. Check all hoses....even the resorvoir! My old 4Runner started leaking badly and I noticed it was the resorvoir that had a crack in it....along with the steering box. Pumps remanned from the auto parts store is around $70 IIRC.

 

I bought my 95 with a leaky ps pump - ran it that way for 6 months, topping off the fluid weekly. I got tired of that and bought a pump from O'Reilly's ($70), along with new pressure and return hoses. Took me about 2 hours total. Hardest part is getting the pulley off the old pump. If I can do it, anyone can!

 

Also look and see if it just leaking between the pump and the ressevour, Theres a little O-ring that get worn or hardened (You can see in the piture Matti poosted) Ive replaced this before and was $3 from dealer.

 

I've got a pump that I'll let go for dirt cheap if you need it... email please.

This is my issue as well! Its the only place I can find that leaks the ATF fluid...

 

I replaced my o-ring 3 times....then found out it was the resorvoir. Good point tho...

 

well, mine is leaking, but what i cant figure out is that the lines are held on by those little metal clamps that is ALL OVER the engine, not any special hydraulic hoses or crimped fittings........ its leaking from those hoses, and i dont know if it came factory like that or not???

 

Those two hoses that are on the bottom of the pump is vacuum hoses. Notice they attach to a vacuum line right under the plenum on the passenger side right past the EGR valve. I would look more upwards for the leak on the pump...it could be flowing down and leaking off those hoses.

I don't know how you guys can tell where the leak is from, by the time I rebuilt mine it was just a big mass of oily dirt everywhere

 

I hosed mine down with 3 cans of brake cleaner! LOL There was NO crud onthat damn thing then it started ooozing out from just unde the reservior...lol So im guessing its the o ring...hehe

 

the reservoir itself was leaking? where and how?

 

Replaced my reservoir o-ring last friday.
I've been adding fluid for 2 years, finally decided to try the o-ring.
No leaks so far, could it be this simple?
The o-ring was intact but it looked squared and it was brittle. I pulled it apart with my fingers very easily.
I did not not remove the pump just the reservoir.
Here's a tip, let the engine cool down first. The bolt closest to the engine is not easy to get out without burning your hand and wearing gloves is not an option.
