Replacing input shaft on a g52

Hey y'all,
Attempting to pull my input shaft bearing (three prong bearing puller) I broke the tip of my input shaft (uughh). Just ordered a new one from Cobra Transmission ($73.99 great deal!).

Has anyone replaced one of these? I have no transmission experience, I'm already over budget.

Let me know,
Thanks!
-Jackson

Terry I think he needs to replace the whole input shaft and not just the bearing if that's the case then bad news I think you need to dissemble the whole transmission to remove the input shaft because it wont clear the counter shaft. When I replaced my input bearing I used a long 2 jaw puller to remove and a piece of scrap pipe just the right size with a press to install the new bearing.

You're correct 854x4, I need to replace the whole, input shaft. Does anyone have any information on disassembling the w56 transmission?

You need to pull the trans apart. You have to take a gear off the driven shaft in order to get the input shaft out.

Unless that trans is spectactular for some reason, a used one is easier and cheaper to install then changing that shaft.

I need my eyes checked, I missed where he broke the tip off of the shaft of the transmission. I have looked at about trying to rebuild a transmission but by the time I bought the replacement parts, it looked to me like you were better off just buying a new transmission.

854x4...I tried to press a new bearing on and was afraid I was putting to much pressure on the whole shaft/transmission so stopped at that point. I have a spare transmission and am planning to wait til winter when it is real cold and heat the bearing in the oven and see if it will go on easier. Did it take you a lot of pressure to get it on?

Thinking back I honestly cant remember if I used the press or not, I might of used a piece of pipe, block of wood, and a hammer. Its been a few years and I was doing it at night but I do remember that it went on with minimal effort and the transmission had no grinding or noise afterward. I changed the bearing because the transmission was knocking and found the cage broken on the input bearing.

Hey guy's, thanks for the advice. Turns out I've got a g52 tranny, and I haven't been able to find any used ones, only rebuilt, and the cheapest has been $800. That said I decided to go for it, taking it apart wasn't bad at all, just frightening, for those deciding to take on this procedure themselves, feel free to PM me.

As for the bearing, it's true, that #$%&er goes on tight. Since I was replacing the shaft as well, I just flipped the shaft around and used a puller to pull it on while I tapped on the inner race from the other side using a piece of PVC. I understand this probably won't help those trying to replace just this bearing, but if your other option is a new tranny, might as well take the 1-1.5h to pull 5th gear and drop the cluster gear.
