recently my starter is getting weaker and weaker, also also makes some weired noise after cold start. i'm thinking getting it replaced. what would you recommend other then an OEM?

Rebuild what you have or get a remanufactured one with a warranty from a local parts store.

yup, rebuild or replace your contacts....or buy a used Toyota starter (I would trust a used toyota starter over a new, lifetime warranty parts store one)

 

either way, have fun pulling/replacing it.

 

Put in new contacts. Its so easy once the starter is out.

 

you are right, i took a closer look at the starter after reading your reply, i just told myself F*$# it. i called a shop i know very well, the owner quoted me $85 to rebuild it parts and labor included.

 

I got a rebuilt for something like $65 at advance after the core charge. Lifetime Warranty. Once you've replaced it once the second time would be a breeze. Took me a couple hours the first time. 2nd time I could do it in under an hour.

 

OR you could build it yourself and become richer and smarter at the same time!

 

Rebuild your OEM starter completely once you get it out as they are much better rebuilt than what you can get reman IMO.

 

Yes, keep the starter you have by all means. Do a little detective work to isolate the source of the problem and then go from there:

Guys, I don't mean to hijack this thread but its related to this topic. I have 91 4runner with the 3.0 with 183k miles on it and my starter contacts are starting to go out as well. I remember the previous owner mentioned to me that he had already replaced the contacts, has anyone here ever gone through multiple contacts on the same starter? I know I should just take a look at the starter when I have some time but I was curious if this was normal.

Could be that low current to the solenoid is not letting it pull in tight to make good contact and causing the plunger to arc and burn up the contacts.
