regearing

Hey guys soon im going to get a 4 inch lift and 35s and i know it is pretty necessary to regear but the thing about regearing is that i dont have the tools or the knowledge to do the job and i dont personally know someone who could do it or help me out. So i was just curious on how much installation would cost and how bearable it would be to drive (its a 5speed) with stock gearing for a while until i can afford regearing. Anyone with personal experience with the set up?

I just priced re gearing my 94 front and back.
Rear end re gear with an Aussie locker and new 4.88's is $726.00 that includes the labor $200.00.
the front is around $500.00 (no locker)
A 4 Runner is different I think?? Pricing might be different.

Thats sounds like a pretty good deal Toyo! I was looking at just ordering the new third member built and geared from TG for $1k with a detroit for the rear and doing the gears up front myself. That way I will have an extra 3rd.

I would not drive too long without the gears on 35's if at all. 33's I would say okay, but not 35's. I would just collect all the parts and do it all at once just to be safe.

35's and 4.10s are going to suck. My guess is 2nd will be the highest gear you can use on any kind of incline. I think I were in your chose I just might drive around in low range with the front hubs unlocked when I was in the city.

My buddy had a 22re 5speed with stock gears on 36's and it was just fine around town, might just wind out each gear a little longer then usual. Cruising you really lose 5th most of the time. He even had some 38s for a couple weeks and it was about the same results.

I have 35's and I can use the other gears, it all depends on the speed you're traveling at when you hit the incline.

I ran 4.10's with my 35's for a couple weeks and it sucked tiny hill's kill your momentum and kill your gas mileage.I was able to run all gears but only when I could get away with it and then I did the 5.29's to compensate and I am so much happier. If you get to Maryland I will gladly help you out with all the install's.

After how painful running even 32's with a 22RE and stock gears was I can't even imagine how bad 35's would be.

Don't forget about Zuk. I think he only charges about $250 labor to set everything up. You just send him the 3rd and the parts and wait. As cold as it is right now he should be in full swing.

For the front, check out the classified sections on all of the forums (esp. Pirate) and post in the wanted sections too. Guys that have SAS'd tend to sell off the "useless IFS crap" pretty cheap. I got a front diff with 5.29's already set up in it for $150 shipped all the way from CA. Good deals are out there you just have to find them.
