refinishing windshield channel

refinishing windshield channel
I have gotten fairly well into the thick of attacking the rust that had developed around the windshield of this '94 pickup. Included are a couple pics, the bottom left corner had been the worst. The primary tool has simply been a grinder with a metal blade then a sanding wheel and some hand sanding in the top corners whose radii are smaller than the grinder. I have put a coat of phosphoric acid that needs 24h to cure and meantime am seeking some advice on the best way forward. I have some brush-on Ace brand interior/exterior oil based primer that I had planned on a coat or two and then .. install the windshield. Time is short before I need to drive almost a hundred miles and back, otherwise I would say putting a top coat on before the windshield glue would help seal everything up. Would it be recommended spending the extra time finding a suitable top coat for the channel or would this is overkill? Also, would a spray primer be superior to brush paint? I could take the bus to delay the glass for sake of finishing this off better.
Furthermore, some of the rust made it beyond the extent of the trim and I will need to touch this up so it looks halfway decent. This is true at the top adjacent to the roof where the clear coat is almost gone, demanding to be repainted first. To avoid taking the trim off in the future, maybe it's best to get into priming and painting the whole roof or at least a few inches out from the trim to avoid a paint seam there? Any thoughts or examples would help.
