Recomendations on axle rebuild and a rear locker

Hey guys. I've been surfing around the forum a lot recently and have decided what I'm going to be doing to my 4runner. But first some basic info about it and then I'll go into what I plan on doing to it and with it. I would like some additional input as to where I can source parts and additional info. I have used the search feature I just need some help on final decesions. Thanks!

1990 4runner 4door
3VZE w/ homemade silencer intake mod and nothing else
4.10 gears
5-speed 4WD
15" American racing rims with Silent Armor 31x10.5's

What I am doing with it

This is going to be my wifes DAILY DRIVER (yes I know its caps so please bear that in mind) as well as our small family-mobile for trips and such. We will be taking this out on occasional wheeling through some decent terrain requiring a locker. Nothing too hard as I'll be getting a Jeep or FJ40 soon.

Plans:

I need to do a rebuild of the rear axle, so while I'm at it I'm going to throw in a Powertrax Lock-rite locker #1620. However what seals do i need and where can i get them from? Should I go about replacing the bearings as well?

Front CV boots are shot so I'll be replacing the boots and CV's but keeping the olds as spares. The new cv's are from Checker or Autozone with the lifetime warranty and the boots but I'm getting the upgraded boots that bolt onto the axle flange ( http://www.downeyoff-road.com/Chassi...ents/index.htm ) On the same page are the Mile Marker front hubs I'm planning on getting. Also thanks Robinhood 150 for the excellent write-up!

Wheels and tires will be swapped for some meatier tires for off-road driving but when it's the daily driver It'll have the current wheels/tires. No idea what I'm going to do, but since I have no lift I don't know what to get.

A lift would be nice, but I need it fairly cheap in cost but not cheap in quality. If I do get a lift I need some sidesteps for the wife, so keep that in mind for lifts.

I MIGHT do the 1UZFE swap but am waiting on the results from the pirate4x4 forum to see if it will be feasible price wise considering I have the 5 speed and not the auto. Otherwise I may end up with the 3.4L or a 4.3L chevy V6.

So help me out here. I need the rear axle seals (cant seem to find those) a cheap place for a lock-rite, front CV's with the LLT warranty or something else but most importantly your advice. Thanks in advance!

Personally I'd hold out for an Aussie locker. (In fact that is what I'm doing now as they are on backorder. $239) You can get lockrites on e bay for like $140 I think.

On the rear axle, I understand the bearings are a PITA and require a SST. I've been talked out of doing mine and will probably just do the seals when/if the locker ever comes available. Think about doing your brakes too since your going to have it all apart to pull the diff.

Here is a useful link: http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...33rearaxle.pdf

which comes from this:

NO! Lockrights are also $240 on e bay. Not sure what I was smoking there.

Rear axle stuff here as a kit: http://www.trail-gear.com/rearaxle.html

or here as a kit or seperately: http://www.marlincrawler.com/htm/axles.htm

General axle stuff, cheapest either rockauto or napaonline, car-part.com(I hate revealing that one!,took me so long to finally discover) for used. Easy swaps I recommend 4:30 gears fom auto 86-95, only thing there, no V6 without adding spacer to pinion gear. The 4 cyl. third member is PLENTY strong, in my opinion, I use it(V6) and has other adv. less weight, cheaper components, lockers, etc. V6 4-pinion unit stronger, heavier, no 4:30's. You got the larger 4-runna rear brakes, other easy swap if not. Chromoly axles are relatively cheap in my view. All the other things your wonderin' seem more personal prefferance deals, choose what ya like.

Wow, why would one want to put in higher gears? I'd bet you have 4.56's now.

My bad! But I'd be willing to bet he has 4.56's , ie his combo, V6 5 speed... Those came with the 4,56's. If it was a 4 cylinder, small wheels, 4.30's

Wanted to add to the list, Solid Pinion Spacer, for your decided locker choice. Bearings should be re-used, as they rarely wear out. What can't you find, spec.?

A word of caution, we have found that to be wrong about 5% of the time. So be careful. Only true way to be certain is to count teeth in ring/pinion and divide. But there is a 95% chance it is 4.10's

The number of teeth is also stamped on the ring itself, open the diff, turn pinion, till you see 41, 43, or other. Then count pinion teeth, do math.
