A few months ago I started having problems with my rear window. At first it would 'give out' when using the switch inside. Then it started doing it using the switch or the key. Eventually it gave out altogether and I would have to 'help' the window to get it to go back up.

So I ordered a motor and regulator from a guy on this board (govt mule). The parts came so I decided to finally tackle this. By the way, I really hate rust!

When I took it apart here is what I found:

minor rust that I can easily fix with rust converter and paint


more minor rust that is more painful than the other stuff but still fixable


hmmm, not so fixable


could this be why my window won't roll up anymore???


Already gave Mike (govt mule) another call to order some rear window guides. Probably paint the new ones up good before putting them back on my glass.

So I'm debating right now, put the new regulator in or just put the old one back in? Only reason I'm asking is that I'm lazy and the arms are not rolled all the way down so I'd have to jerry rig some wires up to a battery and lower the arms using the motor if I put the new one in.

 

I have the same problem. Post pics of the fix if you can. Also do you have the parts guy's email address? I need to get a pair of those guides.

I sanded down the surface rust and applied rust converter.

Primed it with severe rust rustoleum primer:


Taped and primered the portion against the window:


Painted it with some rust preventative paint I had lying around:


Painted the portion against the window:


Done and waiting on the window guides it get it back together:


All the red will be hidden when I put it back together. I thought I had some green but the garage gremlins hid it.

 

Wow, seen that a few times, but always from cars that come from the rust belt (areas that get sale in the winter) and I think the moisture in there and little ventilation does it in.

how did you reattach the channel guides onto the rear window? Mine have popped out and i've had no luck reattaching them securely.

 

I bent them apart with a big screwdriver by turning it sideways in the channel. Then I stuffed the rubber pieces into the brackets and squirted glass adhesive (black stuff that looks like RTV from autozone) into the brackets and then hammered the brackets onto the glass using a rubber mallet.

I gave it 24 hours to cure and mine's been working like a charm since.
